As part of our urgent campaign to save America’s Flagship, the Conservancy has sent a letter to President Joe Biden and key members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, asking political leaders to come together to save the legendary ocean liner. As the symbol of our nation's pride faces possible eviction from her current berth by landlord Penn Warehousing, a new location must be secured quickly to save America's Flagship from destruction.
As the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, the three-page letter implores officials to act, saying in part, “Indeed, it would be a global embarrassment if the nation’s Flagship were to face destruction during this time of grave geopolitical uncertainty abroad.” The loss of the SS United States would be even more tragic on the eve of our nation's 250th birthday.
The letter stresses the importance of federal officials engaging now to help locate a new location for the vessel. Many piers that can accommodate the ship are controlled by either federal or state governments.
The Conservancy's letter to President Biden is part of a multi-faceted campaign to save the ship and advance its commercial activation as a viable private sector project, following the release last year of a transformative redevelopment plan, in conjunction with two prominent New York firms, RXR and MCR Hotels.
As Conservancy President Susan Gibbs said when announcing the letter, "Our cause is bigger than party politics. It’s about demonstrating to the world that our great nation can still unite behind saving one of its most iconic symbols. We’re not looking for a bailout or big check. We need a location for the ship as we advance a viable private sector redevelopment plan."
