Recent VLP Trainings

Hosting Legal Trainings in our community helps VLP to create relationships with legal professionals in the Greater Boston area and educate them about the needs of our client community and avenues they can take to support our work. This winter, VLP hosted two successful in-person trainings in Bankruptcy and Housing.

Complexities in Bankruptcy Training

In December, VLP partnered with the Boston Bar Association to host a training on “Complexities in Bankruptcy Cases.” The training featured a powerful panel discussion – moderated by VLP Staff Attorney Adrian Coss - on racial, gender, and economic disparities in the bankruptcy system and included a presentation of research and data highlighting these disparities.

Litigation in Action: Navigating Your Trial Step By Step

In January, our Housing team hosted an interactive training alongside the Boston Bar Association designed to strengthen litigation skills. With the guidance of experienced attorneys and judges, attendees were able to learn and practice how to prepare for each stage of a summary process trial.

Pro Bono Attorney Jeanne Ross Fights for Client's Housing

In November 2025, a couple sought help from our Housing Lawyer for the Day Program because they were facing eviction due to non-payment of rent. After being unsheltered for three years, the couple had moved in December 2024 into a housing unit operated by an establishment that serves adults with a history of mental health challenges. When they signed the lease, our clients relied on an email from a human services agency that stated they would not need to pay rent and that their meals would be covered. The housing authority later stated that they were not aware of such an agreement, and the person who sent that email made a mistake. Now, the housing authority claimed the couple owed $3,526 in unpaid rent. When our clients reached out to explain the situation, the housing authority refused to rectify the situation, leaving the clients at imminent risk of eviction.

As the trial date approached without any resolution to the misunderstanding or any payment to satisfy the arrears, Jeanne Ross, a regular volunteer at our Housing Lawyer for the Day Clinic, stepped up to take on this case and advocate for these clients. Attorney Ross was able to negotiate with the opposing counsel and reach out to the establishment directly to see if they could repair the situation. Through skillful negotiation, research and outreach, Attorney Ross helped the clients obtain third party assistance to cover their arrearages and reach an agreement with their housing establishment that they would provide financial assistance as well. By February 6, the case had been dismissed, and the couple, who are engaged to be married, were secure in their living arrangement. Attorney Ross was relieved and pleased to help these clients preserve their housing.

She notes, “I have found people are united in a desire to keep people housed. If a tenant’s situation can be resolved, many people are willing to make an effort to work things out. Often, it’s less about applying the law and more about being creative in proposing solutions and approaching negotiations. The clients and I are grateful that no one gave up on them.”

Thank you, Attorney Ross, for your hard work on this case!

Staff Attorney Abigail McCourt's Hard Work Paid Off in Parentage Case

This case really emphasized the importance of our mission to increase access to justice, so that Clients do not have to face these complicated and difficult processes without the support of legal counsel.

-Abigail McCourt, Esq.

This summer, a client came to VLP’s Family Law and Guardianship Clinic seeking assistance with a complex paternity matter. The client initially believed a child to be his. However, after genetic marker testing, he learned he was not the biological father. Because more than 60 days had passed since he signed the Voluntary Acknowledgment of Parentage (VAP), Massachusetts law required him to formally petition the Court to rescind the VAP in order to be removed from the child’s birth certificate.

The legal barriers were significant. Rescinding a VAP outside of the statutory 60-day window requires navigating a highly technical and evolving legal process. Without a zealous advocate, the client would likely have remained legally responsible for a child who was not biologically his.

Complicating matters further, this was the first case of its kind VLP handled since Massachusetts’ new Parentage Law took effect in January 2025, and the standard court forms had not yet been updated to reflect the new statutory framework. Family Law and Guardianship Supervising Attorney Abbie McCourt drafted a new Complaint to Rescind the Voluntary Acknowledgment of Parentage to align with the updated law. After several months of back-and-forth with the Court, the Complaint was ultimately accepted.

In addition to the Complaint, Abbie filed a Motion to Accept Genetic Marker Testing, a Joint Pre-Trial Memorandum, an Agreement for Judgment, and a Proposed Judgment. At the pre-trial conference, the Judge entered the Proposed Judgment, formally rescinding the VAP.

Through persistence, creativity, and meticulous advocacy, Abbie successfully navigated an unclear and evolving legal landscape to secure justice for this client. Her work not only resolved the client’s case but also prompted the Court registry to begin developing updated forms for future litigants facing similar circumstances.

Abbie would like to acknowledge and thank Staff Attorney Ilene Klein, Senior Paralegal Olivia Cella, Executive Director Geraldine Gruvis-Pizarro, and Pro Bono Attorney Kevin Finnegan for their support and mentorship throughout the case.
