Before Bed--Don't Forget
Set Clocks Back 1-hour
|
|
 |
Friends,
No doubt we all know the story of Noah's Ark. To many of us, it's a cute children's tale: the subject of innumerable picture books and nursery wall art.
But if we look closely at the full implications of Noah's story, it's what biblical scholar Phyllis Trible calls a "text of terror."
The biblical flood is a cosmic catastrophe. It blandly tells of the deaths of millions: human beings and animals alike.
It couldn't have been easy for Noah and his family, either. Yes, they survived, but on the way to the rainbow they experienced weeks of rocking and heaving on the ocean swells, with no land in sight.
There comes a turning point, though. It's the place in the tale where the Bible says: "But God remembered Noah..." (8:1).
Did God ever really forget him? Surely not. But what happens next demonstrates to Noah and all his kin that God
does
remember. A great wind pushes the waters away, revealing dry land: a land of promise and hope.
Does God remember us, in the midst of the struggles and difficulties of everyday life? Do our small lives
matter
to the Almighty?
The witness of our faith is that God does remember. And we remember God, in return: especially in the very special celebration known as the Lord's Supper, which will take place this Sunday.
This Sunday, why not begin your week with remembrance, in worship?
Pastor Carl

All Saints' Sunday
November 3, 2019
This Sunday is Communion Sunday. It is also All Saints' Sunday. We will give
thanks for all the saints in our lives who have died this past year: for those whose names are listed in the bulletin, as well as those in our hearts but not listed.
In music this week, several special solos will be featured during worship:
Prelude: Bennett Spotts on saxophone
Introit: sung by Bess Ploener
Anthem: sung by John Burke
Offertory: Victoria Borrelli and Bennett Spotts on piano
Postlude: Victoria Borrelli and Jim Goldsworthy on piano
Join us this Sunday at 10:15AM for a service filled with beautiful music and meaningful worship. Be sure to stay for coffee hour immediately after!

IMAGES OF ARMENIA
Following worship this Sunday, in the Gladish Room, Pastor Carl (and the Rev. Claire Pula, too, as she joins us after conducting worship at her church) will present images of their recent mission/study tour to Armenia, with the
Jinishian Memorial Program
of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
|
|
Their journey included two distinctive emphases: exploring sites of religious and historical significance in this oldest of Christian nations, and visiting preschools, orphanages, agricultural co-ops and other mission sites.
You're invited to linger after worship and coffee hour this Sunday to learn more about Presbyterian mission in this unique land!

Dear Lamington Church Members and Friends:
You’ve probably read or heard about Grow-One Sunday coming up on Sunday, November 10, 2019. We are asking that you consider raising your giving by one of two methods. You could increase your giving by 1 percent of your income (GROW-TOWARD-TITHING); or you could GROW-A-STEP in a dollar amount of your own choosing.
When we Grow-One, how will our church use the money?
- Continue to offer an excellent, inspiring Sunday worship experience
- Christian education to maintain and improve our teaching the faith to people of all ages
- Fellowship events that strengthen the ties that bind us to one another and to our Lord
- Mission outreach that fulfills the Great Commission
Our church budget process begins with our income. We can only budget our expenses after we determine our income.
We need EVERY MEMBER on the team! Let’s all GROW (at least ONE) together!
Sincerely,
Angus Miller, Co-Chair Finance Committee
For the Grow-One Stewardship Team

Session News
This past Monday evening, Pastor Carl Wilton, the Session, the Board of Deacons and representatives of the Presbytery of Elizabeth met together to talk about this community’s joys and concerns. We all agree that things are not going as well as we would have hoped. A task force has been formed to discuss next steps, and to discern a way forward. We covet your prayers for the leadership of this congregation, the pastor and for this community.

Claire (who is, of course, the wife of our Pastor) is now serving as Interim Pastor of the Highlands Presbyterian Church in Schooley's Mountain. The weekly series of Bereavement Support Group meetings is taking place here at Lamington Church on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00PM.
Claire will present helpful information about what to expect during the grief process, which unfolds according to a different timetable for everyone. There will be opportunities for sharing personal experiences, for those who wish to do so. Confidentiality is assured.
The group is open to anyone who has experienced a loss, which need not be recent.
