Reports

From Fr. Christopher Wilkerson

My dear All Saints family,

As we continue to explore new ways to revitalize, re-energize, and eventually to grow our parish, it is important to remember that our God is relentless in love, always yearning after us, calling to us, reaching out to us at all times and in all places. So we should, for our part, always be seeking God, listening for the voice of the Spirit for new ideas, fresh inspiration, and exciting new ways of seeing, thinking, and being.

Whence this lofty and poetical introduction to this week’s column, you ask? Well, I’ve been finding some inspiration is a place that is not personally familiar to me, and I want to share that with y’all.

Many of you know that for some time now All Saints has been providing space one night a week for a local chapter of Narcotics Anonymous, an addiction recovery program and support group founded in 1953 and modeled on the 12-step program pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. The Twelve Steps to recovery have been around since the 1930s, and the individual steps may well be at least passingly familiar to a lot of us. If you’ve never read through all twelve steps, or if it’s been a while since you looked at them, I highly recommend your looking them up. They constitute a powerful spiritual journey, and completing them is far from easy.

Congregational Care Ministry

Mission of Congregational Care Ministry: To give solace, understanding and spiritual support to parishioners through a three-pronged approach:

  • Eucharistic Ministers deliver the Sacraments to individuals who cannot attend church. Eucharistic ministers receive training from the rector relating to prayers and presentation of the bread and wine in an individual's home or current living situation.

  • Service Ministers help those who need assistance with rides to church, grocery shopping, doctors appointments, and similar events they are not able to provide for themselves. Service Ministers may also connect parishioners with community resources that can meet their needs. Service Ministers may also spend time visiting, writing cards/notes or making phone calls to those who are isolated, lonely or ill.

  • Stephen Ministers provide emotional and spiritual support as people deal with illness, dying, grief/loss, divorce, or other difficult life situations. Stephen Ministers receive 50+ hours of training before becoming caregivers.

As the primary contact for Congregational Care, especially in the instance of an immediate or critical need such as a death, hospitalization, serious health issue, or emotional need, Fr. Christopher Wilkerson is the point person. For other needs, Fr C will contact a member of the CCM team who can best provide assistance to the concerned individual and provide the team member with the parishioner’s contact information and a brief statement of his or her need(s).

Stephen Ministers and Eucharistic Ministers may be matched with someone for a minimum of one year or more, or as appropriate. Service Ministers may be matched and serve on an as-needed basis. The Coordinator of the Service Ministry (Paul Van Duser) will recruit members of this ministry from among parish members, matching ministers with parishioners in need.

Please note that all congregational care is confidential! Your CCM Team will never divulge information to anyone outside the team unless specifically requested by a care receiver. For instance, you may want to add your name to the prayer list, or share with the parish any circumstances you'd want our community to know, e.g. prayers for healing and recovery from surgery, support managing a new medical diagnosis, caring for someone ill or dying. The sharing of any information (what, with whom) is invariably the care receiver’s choice.

The Congregational Care Ministry team consists of Paul Van Duser, Julie Holly and Father Christopher. Paul is the CCM Coordinator and Julie Holly is the Stephen Ministry Coordinator. Parishioners are invited to contact any of the three team members for more information, to volunteer for the ministry, or to ask for ministry assistance.
