A Home Blessing at Epiphany

A part of church history is the custom of blessing homes at the New Year. A family would hold a short service of prayer to ask God's blessing on their dwellings and on all who live, work with, and visit them. In this way, we invite Jesus to be a "guest" in our home, a listener to each conversation, a guide for troubled times, and a blessing in times of thanksgiving.

"Chalking the door" or the door step may be used as a way to celebrate and literally "mark" the occasion. In the Old Testament the Israelites were told to mark their doors with the blood of the lamb on the night of the Passover to ensure that the angel of death would pass them by. Deuteronomy 6:9 says that we shall "write [the words of God] on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, ... and you shall write them on the door posts of your house and on your gates."

Chalk is made of the substance of the earth and is used by teachers to instruct and by children to play. As the image of the chalk fades, we will remember the sign we have made and transfer it to our hearts and our habits.

It is in the home that the first experience of love occurs; it is there that love is nurtured and grows to maturity. The Christian home is also the ground for much of people's spiritual growth.

The ministry of Jesus occurs in many different homes. Therefore to hallow the home as an environment for nurture and renewal, is a deeply felt need by many Christian households.

The blessing of a home encourages Christians to dedicate their life at home to God and to others.

From A New Zealand Prayer Book page 762

We will be using the form of blessing below at All Saints this coming Sunday, January 08. It is also appropriate as a blessing for your own homes tomorrow, January 06 - Epiphany.

Peace and Blessings, Fr. Jim+

Epiphany is a traditional day to bless your home, inviting Jesus to be revealed in our daily lives. The prayers ask God's blessing on your home and all who live there and visit. As part of the prayers, we mark the doorways with the initials of the legendary names of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. They are marked in chalk and framed by the numbers of the new year, 2017, as shown below. Because the names of the Wise Men are legendary, it has also been said that "CMB" stands for Christe, Mansionem Benedicat which is Latin for "Christ, bless this house."

The prayers ask God's blessing on your home and all who live and visit there.
Leader
P eace be with this house and with all who live here.
All
Blessed be God forever.

The following is said as each character is marked on the door.

20 + CMB + 17

"The three Wise Men..."C" Caspar..."M" Melchior..."B"and Balthasar followed the star of God's Son who became man..." 20 "two thousand..."  17 "and seventeen years ago."

+ "May Christ bless our home..."+"and remain with us throughout the new year."

Leader: Gracious God, you sent your son, Jesus, to become like us, so that we might become like him. Let us now pray that Jesus will enter our home and bless it with his presence. May he always be here among us; may he nurture our love for each other, share in our joys, and comfort us in our sorrows. Inspired by his teachings and example, let us make our home a dwelling place of love, which spreads far and wide the goodness of Christ. It is in his name that we pray. Amen.

Bringing Christ's healing love to hurting people

The Adventure of a New Year
and
Being Our Authentic Spiritual Selves

The start of a new year - both our new church year each Advent and the new calendar year every January - can be an inspiring time of beginning new habits and shedding old ones. Yet any time during the year, each day, we have the opportunity to be more spiritually aware and accepting of God's grace to be our unique authentic spiritual selves.

From Joyce Rupp, "Open the Door: A Journey to the True Self":

When we open the door of our heart to what beckons us inward, we become adventurers of the unknown territory of our being....

Like the dawn bringing illumination to the day, the journey to our authentic self holds countless findings waiting to enlighten us. The doors we open ultimately lead to the genuine nucleus of our self, affording us the opportunity to shed the falseness to which we once tightly clung.

The more we enter our core reality, the more our true self becomes available to us. When we seek to unite with our inherent goodness (our God-ness), we often encounter obstacles to love that try to thwart our pursuit. We find a lot of inner cobwebs hiding neglected virtues. In addition, we usually uncover dusty corners of useless debris discarded from who we thought we were. Such is the adventure and challenge of uniting more intimately with what is integral to our authenticity. Some opened doors  lead to shedding and some lead to embracing. All of the opened places of the heart eventually move us into oneness with radiant Love.

We need not feel weighed down by the possibility of having been overly optimistic about specific goals or resolutions for the new church year or the start of 2017. Instead, we can look forward to the peaceful simplicity of more fully entrusting our lives to God and guidance of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, we learn to gracefully embrace being truly ourselves and allow the light of Jesus to shine through us to others day to day, moment by moment.
