How About Now?  Oh the people you'll meet..
And the experiences you'll gain...
"Attending LTI in 2016 was a great experience for my professional career.  For those whom desire to enhance their leadership skills, or to become a leader they desire to be, one should attend LTI.  I enjoyed getting to know my housemates who were from different areas throughout the state.  During the three days, I grasped as much knowledge as I could.  From learning about different personalities, interacting with fellow parks & recreation professionals through teambuilding and networking; and the information presented by speakers were all an intangible opportunity.  The speakers provided a wealth of knowledge,
encouragement and an inner desire to become a better leader
and better professional.  I left LTI with a desire to apply the knowledge I had gained to those that we all serve, our communities.  The leaders we are now, are the leaders our communities see.  In order to assist our communities to grow as individuals, we must do so as professionals.  Attending LTI supports this professional growth.

Meet our 2018 LTI committee...
Featured in March:  Kristen Hamill
Kristen is Recreation Program Supervisor for Newport News Parks, Recreation and Tourism, working with their Youth Programs division, in charge of programming, marketing and special events.
Her career started in the recreation field while in college working for a local department supervising ball fields as well as working intramural sports. She went to school to obtain a Recreation Degree from Carson Newman College and after graduation, worked for the Boys and Girls Club of Gloucester as a Program Supervisor and also worked as Interim Club Director for the Mathews Club.   Kristen then moved on to Newport News Parks, Recreation and Tourism where she has been for the past 10 years.   Kristen started as a Recreation Facility Supervisor where she oversaw the operations of one community center and was then promoted to a Senior Program Coordinator, programming their instructional program as well as supervising multiple facilities.  From there she was promoted to a Recreation Program Supervisor of Facilities where she supervises the operations of 6 facilities, finally making a lateral move to her current position with Youth Programs.
During her tenure in Newport News, she became involved with the Leadership Training Institute by attending in 2010 and 2012 and then joined the planning committee starting in 2014.    She gives credit to LTI for preparing her for her promotions she has had in her 10 years with Newport News.  To Kristen, LTI is a great institute to attend where one can learn more about themselves and how to be a better leader.
