Celebrating Minority Mental Health Month

July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! Bebe Moore Campbell was an American author, journalist, teacher, and mental health advocate who worked tirelessly to shed light on the mental health needs of the Black community and other underrepresented communities. She had two goals in declaring July as Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. The first was to improve access to mental health treatment and services and promote public awareness of mental illness. The second was to enhance public awareness of mental illness among underserved communities.

Longtime ASCC Board Chair, Chad Donnahoo, rolling off the Board of Directors

Chad, donut leave us!! 🍩 On Wednesday, June 26th we held the last ASCC board meeting under the leadership of our Board Chair, Chad Donnahoo, who has served on the All Souls Counseling Board of Directors for 15 years, 8 of which were as Board Chair. Chad has been instrumental in All Souls Counseling Center’s growth and success. We are so grateful for his longstanding dedication and faithful service to promoting access to mental health services in WNC.

We are thrilled to announce that Heather Johnson, owner of Kudzu Brands, stepped into the role of Board Chair on July 1st. We look forward to her leadership and can't wait to see what the future holds!

Meet our Summer Interns: Addie & Elle!

Addie Porter (left) is a student-athlete at Vanderbilt University and is studying Communications and Psychology. Addie is originally from Asheville, NC and is so glad to be back in town this summer! When asked why she wanted to intern at ASCC she said, "I am looking to help people and make a difference in my community. I also believe that access to mental health services is important for everyone and the work All Souls is doing is much needed." In the future, she hope to get a master’s degree in social work and continue to work with nonprofits.

Elle Thigpen (right) is a rising senior volleyball player at UNC Asheville! Studying Psychology and Health Sciences, Elle plans to pursue grad school in Social Work and Counseling. As a UNCA Athletics Mental Health Ambassador, she worked with All Souls on the Mental Health Matters Walk in 2023. Inspired by that experience, Elle is excited to learn how our team provides high-quality and compassionate mental healthcare to uninsured and underinsured WNC residents.

ASCC in the Community

On June 13th, our Executive Director Meredith Switzer, alongside our friend Robin Payne from NAMI, presented on women's mental health to the Women for Women Giving Circle members.

Our team was also present at the annual Chamber meeting on June 17th, where we snapped a picture with staff members Mary Waller and Victoria Henlsey, as well as Board members Peter Best, Heather Johnson, and Brandy Mills. We want to extend our congratulations to our new Board Chair Heather Johnson and Kudzu Brands for receiving the Asheville Chamber’s 2024 President's Award!

Community Partner and Donor Appreciation

On June 27, Red Tree Builders hosted a magical night to celebrate their company joining the Alair Homes network. Red Tree’s owners, Brandon, and Amanda Bryant, are strong advocates for mental health, a healthy community platform they share with the Alair home-builders network.

Meredith and Mary were asked to join the Red Tree and Alair guests at the Radical Hotel’s Golden Hour restaurant for a fabulous evening of fancy dress, delicious food, creative elements, and a spotlight on All Souls Counseling Center. ASCC is honored that the Bryants chose our nonprofit to be the beneficiary of fundraising activities before and during this sparkling Asheville evening.

Brandon and Amanda pour their hearts into building authentic relationships and it shines through their work and community impact. Thank you, Red Tree Builders and Alair Homes for your incredible support of our mission. And congratulations to Team Red Tree for lifting a luminous night that local guests and Alair members from across the country will long remember.
