SITE OF STRUGGLE AT BLOCK MUSEUM ENLIGHTENS AND DISTURBS

Exhibit Opens in Montgomery This August

The exhibition A Site of Struggle: American Art against Anti-Black Violence at the Block Museum in Evanston is both enlightening and disturbing. So disturbing that within the gallery space are areas where you can sit quietly should the images become too overwhelming. It includes 65 objects of art and ephemera created between 1895 and 2013.

A Site of Struggle, curated by Janet Dees, shows how African American artists, rather than being just victims of racial violence, helped to shape the discourse, and facilitate grieving, activism and healing. The exhibition of art and ephemera includes Ida B. Well’s 1895 anti-lynching pamphlet A Red Record – Lynchings in the United States .

'ALL THAT LIGHT ' CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF THE ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

Curated by Tracie D. Hall ‘All That Light’ opened on Friday, July 8 at the Logan Center for the Arts and Arts + Public Life’s Arts Incubator Gallery on Chicago’s South Side. The show is a ten year retrospective of the Artists-in-Residence Program celebrating artists including Faheem Majeed, zakkiyyah najeebah dumas o’Neal and Krista Franklin. The show features a wide range of multimedia works, panels and performances from the program’s alumni.

It is organized to reflect on the multiple meanings of light – to illuminate or ignite; to emit radiant energy; and to be easily carried. The exhibit runs through September 11^th.

Pigment was particularly taken with a young man who was transfixed by a work and said for him it was the layers of the piece that required you to stand and engage. Our take is the future of this exhibit is so bright you’ve got to wear shades. Find a summary of activities here.

This Friday, July 15^th from noon to 1:00 p.m. curator Tracie D. Hall speaks with Faheem Majeed, zakkiyyah najeebah, dumas o’Neal and Theaster Gates in a virtual panel Artists as Arts Administrators.
