A Full Calendar for Diversity Council Events
The Diversity Council and Ms. Lee hosted nine events throughout the month in February to celebrate
the Asian New Year and Black History Month.
Diversity Council Presents: Educate, Celebrate, and Empower!
The word for this month’s Black History Celebrations was, “trailblazer!” In celebration of Black History Month, Diversity Council Board Members and Student Government leaders hosted its Fourth Annual Quiz Bowl for elementary students during chapel. This provided students with an opportunity to learn more about influential African American leaders and community members.
In addition to the Quiz Bowl, the Diversity Council also led a preschool chapel about Jane Bolin. Jane is considered one of the first African-American judges in the United States and the first African-American female to graduate from Yale School of Law! Christina Barrow, Student Government President, and Nadia Osmani, Diversity Council Board Chair, even incorporated a game for the preschoolers to test student’s knowledge on what they learned! Every time we say “first,” you say: “TRAILBLAZER!”
Diversity Council also hosted a series of Lunch N Learns that highlighted influential African American leaders and trailblazers in the community. This series was inspired by Alexis Amey, a high school senior. Middle and high school students had the opportunity to attend a Lunch N Learn and learn more about the career field of their choice; Lunch N Learn panelists consisted of ELCAparents and those a part of the ELCA Ccommunity. Each Lunch N Learn panel was moderated by high school students and focused on careers in Business / Entrepreneurship, Women in Medicine / Public Health, Public Service, and Sports Medicine.
All of our Lunch N Learn speakers did a wonderful job of speaking to our ELCA student community and we are honored to have them share their insights and experiences!
The Asian New Year is the biggest holiday in Asian cultures and lasts from February 1st to the 11th. Students enjoyed a friendly competition of ping pong and enjoyed bubble tea, egg rolls, and lo mein noodles at lunch.
Introducing a Trailblazer
ELCA's Homecoming King & Queen read to elementary students
at the beginning of the month. Timothy Blackburn and Nadia Osmani, ELCA’s Homecoming King and Queen, read a book about Mae Jemison, the first African American female astronaut. The elementary kids enjoyed hearing about the accomplishments of Dr. Jemison, and left feeling inspired and ready to work to accomplish their dreams, just like Mae Jemison!
Black History Month Cultural Food
During middle and high school lunches Diversity Council members and Board served food in honor of Black History month. One student commented, ”This is the best food I’ve had at the school.” The menu featured recipes from iconic Black chefs - shrimp n’ grits, jollof rice, jerk chicken, and plantains.

Senior Piercia Johnson received the coveted Girl Scout Gold Award with her "Loving Yourself" project focusing on mental health issues faced by teens particularly during the pandemic. Her project seeks to destigmatize mental health issues that are often ignored and left untreated. She instituted the Teen Mental Health Workshop to provide resources to teens who are suffering from stress, fear, anxiety, grief, isolation and uncertainty created by CoVID-19 pandemic. Piercia enlisted the support of two certified counselors and one certified fitness trainer/nutritionist to help teens and their parents recognize and manage these mental health challenges and assist with coping strategies.

2022 STAR Student and STAR Teacher
Congratulations to Caden Young who has been named ELCA’s 2022 STAR Student. STAR is the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition Program sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. Caden received the STAR recognition based on having the highest SAT in his class and for his scholastic average. Caden, who has attended ELCA since kindergarten, selected his AP Psychology teacher, Mrs. Valerie Fields, as ELCA’s STAR Teacher who has had a big impact on his education. Mrs. Fields has been a teacher at ELCA for nine years.
Caden is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, the Diversity Council, and the Student Government Association. He earned AP Scholar designation in 2021 and is an AP Capstone Diploma Candidate. For two consecutive years Caden represented ELCA in the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program reaching regional level in social studies. He also received the regional level Mock Trial Outstanding Witness Award in 2021. In addition to his scholastic awards, Caden has been on the Varsity Soccer team, served as a summer Camp 323 counselor, a peer tutor, elected to homecoming court, and has worked with underclassmen in the writing lab.
Caden has been accepted to Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, and University of Georgia. He is waiting to hear from several other colleges before making his final decision.
We are honored to have Caden and Mrs. Fields represent ELCA as the STAR student and STAR teacher for 2022.

ELCA is pleased to announce that all 5 of our students were chosen as semifinalists for the program.
Please wish these students luck as they prepare for their next step in the process: in-person interviews at Berry College on February 26!

The ELCA Drama team traveled to Dublin, GA on Friday, February 11 where they performed Letter from Birmingham Jail as well as A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Theatre Dublin. Built in 1934 as a movie theater, Theatre Dublin was impeccably renovated in 1996 as a performing arts center.
The group had the privilege of visiting the First African Baptist Church of Dublin. First African Baptist Church was established in 1867 and is the oldest African American church in the City of Dublin GA. The current building was built in 1914 after the original wooden church was torn down. On April 17, 1944, the Colored Elks Clubs of Georgia held their state convention at First African Baptist Church in Dublin and sponsored an essay contest. A 15 year old student at Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta delivered a speech entitled “The Negro and the Constitution.” Little did the audience realize they were witnessing the first public speech by Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., and the start of the Civil Rights Movement.
ELCA's group listened to the Mayor of Dublin give a history of the town and the church and further learned about Dublin's role in the Civil Rights Movement through a skit. Students were chosen to portray characters in the skit.
Senior Steven Bundy, who played the role of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in ELCA's Letter from a Birmingham Jail was the last person picked and, consequently, his lines were quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which he knew well.
Steven was then allowed to stand and deliver more of his lines from Letter From Birmingham Jail in the historic setting where MLK had stood nearly 80 years ago.
What an amazing experience for Steven and our students!
