Masks. And words from Alan Storey.
|
This week we sport masks made in the village by Kelly Mork and Angela Mietzke. If you would like to order one,
email the Holden Store
. All proceeds go to supporting the village this summer. If you’d like a peek into what it’s like to shelter and social-distance in the village chalets, check out
HOLDEN VOICES
. Holden Village is under the same mandate as all of Washington State. Remote does not matter in this case.
In this issue of
All Things New
you will find several treasures from Alan Storey. Many of you know him as a profound prophetic voice from South Africa, inspired by Dan Erlander, and a friend the village. You will find his Easter and COVID-19 sermon, a podcast from 2018 and two classes from the village archives.
Wherever you may be reading this from, we hope that you find inspiration and sustenance for these days of uncertainty. May you be safe, may you be well, and may you be held in love.
With good courage,

Easter as Exodus
By Alan Storey, Methodist Pastor from Cape Town, South Africa
Today a plague is sweeping the world. It is stealing our breath – reminding us of the futility of our borders and boots we use to patrol them and the bombs we use to punish those who transgress them. A plague that makes a mockery of our selfish individualism by writing our illusion of independence into law: “You will not socialise.” A plague that has forced human retreat. In response all creation rejoices. The dolphins dance and the birds sing in blue sky. This is the great humbling of humanity. We are the problem.

In the Silence and the Earthquake
"The land doesn't lie. Unjust policies, exploitative policies – the creation carries the consequences of our corruption. The earth exposes our abuse. Climate chaos today reminds us that we are one. The climate doesn't care what country you come from, what flag you fly, what anthem you sing. It doesn't respect your religion, your language, your class, your denomination. We are one. Thus declares the earth. Our greed will kill us. To live without limits is to die."

Reign of Christ: Facing Fascism Faithfully
"If we are going to be faithful to this moment, we need to remember we are beloved and known. Everything we are fighting for out there we are complicit with within, but we are still beloved. The person we are resisting out there is also beloved. We need to resist in a way that affirms their baptism and lives out ours."

Hope in the Dark
by Rebecca Solnit
Hope in the Dark was written to counter the despair of radicals at a moment when they were focused on their losses and had turned their back to the victories behind them—and the unimaginable changes soon to come. In it, she makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable.
