The line-up for the 2021 Author! Author! literary series is about to be revealed, and it's epic! The Deschutes Public Library Foundation enters the ninth season of this popular series with a new formatauthors in conversation with other authors—presented live online. Keep an eye on your inbox; we'll reveal the line-up of these award-winning writers in early October.
October: Explore All Things Sci-Fi & Fantasy
Trekkies and mermaids unite in October as Deschutes Public Library presents Know Sci-Fi & Fantasy. We'll explore everything from the making of Star Trek II, to exploring the mythic traditionand modern takeon mermaids. We'll track down spirits with Dustin Pari from Ghost Hunters, and discuss Octavia E. Butler and the connection between visionary fiction and social justice movements with Walidah Imarisha. Looking for more? How about the history of Halloween, a deep dive into the hero's journey, and a look at conspiracy theories and their role in U.S. history? Find a full line-up here. Hear from Award-Winning Illustrator Zeke Peña
In collaboration with REFORMA Oregon, we're proud to present a talk by illustrator Zeke Peña. Peña won the Pura Belpré Award last year for his work in the beautiful book My Papi Has a Motorcycle. Join us online on October 22 to hear about Peña's artistic practice and the creation of his award-winning book. You can hear from Peña about his upcoming presentation in this short video. Peña's presentation is part of the Mock Pura Belpré Awards, which REFORMA Oregon bestows upon a Latinx illustrator and author for an outstanding picture book that portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latinx cultural experience. // Venga a ver quienes ganan los permios Mock Pura Belpré y escuche una presentación especial por el galardonado ilustrador Zeke Peña el 22 de octubre. The Pumpkin Decorating Contest Lives On!
Our annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest moves online this year—which means you can be more creative than ever! This Halloween tradition is fun for all ages. Decorate a pumpkin as one of your favorite book characters and send us a photo. We’ll share the entries with the community for online voting; winners get a fun bag of library swag. It’s easy and fun for the whole family! Entries are due by October 15. Click here for rules and info on how to submit your entry.
Undefined: Taking Submission for Volume 2
Submissions are open for Volume 2 of Undefined: An Arts Publication. Undefined highlights the creative work of tweens, teens, and young adults ages 12 through 20. The first volume was filled with amazing work; be sure to check it out here. The submission deadline for Volume 2 is October 9. Please share with the tweens/teens/young adults in your life; we're excited to share their creativity! Find information here about how to submit to Volume 2.
Youth Book Club: Changeling
Set in a magical world complete with creatures from folklore, Changeling takes young readers on a journey of monsters, magic, and discovery. The book, which is the first in a new series, is an Oregon Battle of the Books title in the 3rd-5th grades division. It's available to download as an eBook without waiting on Hoopla Digital here. Kids and their families can join in on a exploration of the book, including a reading as well as a craft based on the book, during the upcoming online programs: Reading: Oct. 7 | Craft: Oct. 14 | Discussion: Oct. 21
Fall Meals: Find Inspiration with Magazines You Can Download
Leaves are falling, the shadows are lengthening, and the days are growing shorter. If the start of fall puts you in the mood for food, we have great news for you: your library card gives you free access to nearly 200 cooking magazines through RBdigital, including Cook's Illustrated, Bon Appétit, Clean Eating, Food Network Magazine, Saveur, and more. There's something for everyone, from vegan to BBQ, and soups to desserts. If you want to find the perfect wine to pair with your meal, you'll find Wine Spectator and more. Have your library card handy when you log in here. You can download as many magazines as you like, and you never have to worry about returns.
Wrapping up Summer with the Library 2020 with Prizes Galore
Our thank to everyone who participated in this year’s Summer with the Library program—it looked a little different, but it was a ton of fun! Thanks to a donation from the Roundhouse Foundation we were able to run the program online with the Beanstack app, and thanks to the Bend Masonic Lodge's generous gift of Kindle eReaders, 30 lucky winners can now download library books from home! Other prizes included lots of puppets and gift cards. Congratulations to all of the winners. Keep on reading!
