Message from Matthew Beland
CUMC Council Chair
Greetings!
We are now 2 weeks away from Rally Day which is on Sunday, September 14! The Church Council traditionally spearheads our Rally Day which takes places after the church service. I hope we can have a solid showing of council members to help organize and volunteer. The Men’s Breakfast Group has also been a great help in the past so I have added them to this invite.
Many tasks happen on the day of the event but we do need volunteers for the following:
- Set Up (I’ll ask Donald to set up the grill, tents, and tables but I think we usually do the chairs, tablecloths, etc. in the morning before service)
- Cooking and Shopping (Purchase and cook the burgers (beef, turkey & veggie) and hot dogs; purchase buns, cheese, condiments, and 3 bags of Match Lite charcoal (all reimbursable through the office). Glen tells me that last year we cooked 50-60 burgers, 15-20 veggie burgers,15-20 turkey burgers, and "a bunch of hot dogs." Having two cooks would make cooking go smoothly.
- Kitchen/Drink Coordinators (we'll need help assessing our tablecloths, plates, utensils, drink mixes, etc. and purchasing what may be needed. Glen tells me that as of our last brunch we were pretty good on these supplies but we might need some more disposable plastic tablecloths. We'll also need help making the cooler drinks and getting the potluck dishes out…I am sure we’ll get others to help day of)
- Music (I think it'll be Peter and the Ukes again)
Thanks everyone. Please email me with your availability and/or with any other thoughts to make this event special. Please also let me know of any questions you may have.
Finally, this a great and easy opportunity to invite some friends to church or to ask them to stop by for a burger or hot dog!
Sincerely,
Matthew Beland, Council Chair

Chatham UMC supports
Turn the Towns Teal
Turn The Towns Teal®, a national campaign to promote awareness of ovarian cancer and its often subtle symptoms, was the inspiration of Gail MacNeil of Chatham, NJ. This campaign goes forward in her name AND in her honor.
| |
The CUMC Church Council voted few years ago to stand in solidarity with families who have had a loved one with ovarian cancer, by tying teal ribbons around the trees on our property. We need some volunteers after church on Sunday, August 31, to help tie these ribbons around the trees on Main Street and in our back parking lot area. The ribbons will be displayed throughout the month of September.

Small Group Discussion on the Letter from Taize, entitled “Hope Beyond All Hope.”
Join us for the final discussion this Sunday
from 11:30am-12:15pm
in Rodda Hall at the Chatham United Methodist Church
| |
It is so easy to give into despair. It takes intentionality to remain or become people of hope. The Brothers of Taize produce a letter each year that is read by hundreds of thousands of young people. This year’s theme is entitled “Hope beyond all hope.” It is inspired by scriptures, Christian mystics, theologians, and young people living in war zones in Ukraine, Gaza and Central America. Our congregation had some roundtable discussions about the letter during Brunch Church a few weeks ago, and some conversation after church last week. Those who came, want to continue the discusussion. These are stand alone discussions so even if you haven’t been a part of previous discussions, YOU ARE WELCOME TO COME! I’ll bring printed copies to our discussion on Sunday morning. If you would like a copy of the letter sent to you, let me know. Here is a link to the Taize website if you want to read it online: https://www.taize.fr/en_article39682.html
For those interested in further discussion on hope and the Letter from Taize, we’ll be gathering in Rodda Hall on Sundays, after 10:am worship through the end of August. Feel free to get something to eat or drink at the refreshment table, then let’s meet in Rodda Hall from about 11:30am until 12:15pm
All are welcome! Hope-filled or not!
With hope, and with trust,
Pastor Jeff

CUMAC is celebrating their 40th Anniversary on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 5PM at the Westmount Country Club. Chatham UMC is invited! I am on their Board of Trustees and will be attending with my wife Julie. If you would like to carpool, let me know. Here are the links to RSVP: 40th Anniversary Celebration
