Rediscovering the Workhouse:

As the calendar year winds to a close and I find myself looking back wistfully on what seems like an endless list of unfulfilled resolutions, I choose to focus instead on the positive and the progress made - thanks, in no small part, to my fellow SFCC Board Members. For starters, of course, we have welcomed several new Members to the Board this year who have brought fresh ideas and optimism for a continuingly successful Chamber presence here in the southernmost corner of Fairfax County. With this enthusiasm has come a score of new memberships, formalized financial reporting, re-illumination of the iconic, Chamber-owned Lorton Station clock tower (and a clear-cut hillside!).
We've managed to implement our new webpage initiative (visit our SFCC website!) and have added a new Executive Roundtable offering this Fall. We dipped our toes in the hiring "pool" with part-time administrative assistance (and "special project" engagement of several South County High School interns back in the Spring). In so doing, we updated our member rolls and have reconnected, in some cases, with some members who had been all but lost to us. Our members heard from a foreign ambassador on trade issues; we successfully raised money for our nonprofit member, LCAC, and, in the process opened a pathway to what I hope will lead to continued and increasing member engagement and support for so many worthwhile local community-based organizations who are active in our Chamber.
Our membership has grown and continues to grow as the Board has shown a willingness and ability to give members their "money's worth" and a focus on giving our members an "ROI" no one should have to struggle to justify.
At this time, the Board is looking for some part-time assistance to help communicate and interface with our members (through publications such as this one, social media, email blasts, etc.), coordinate some event planning and help maintain our webpage and community calendar, and special projects (among other things).
Here's to a prosperous and Chamber-ful 2019! Happy New Year!
