Chairman's Note

Summer has not slowed our progress this year! We are riding high off a great turnout at The Electric Palm Restaurant on July 20 for our latest Member Mixer Event (purposefully timed to coincide with our Thirsty Third Thursday - TH3!). Thanks again to the Electric Palm's new owner Cody for sponsoring and hosting the event - and for joining the Chamber as well!  Saw a lot of new faces come out to check out all that Cody has done and doing at the place. Great food, new menu, and the service was top notch!  My guest John McManus of Access National Bank took home a dozen golf balls as a door prize.

Remember for future events, if you bring along a door prize, we'll give the floor for a minute to tell us about yourself or your company and present the winner with the prize.  Plans are underway for a possible member event in September, and Helen Stevens and her crew at the Inova HealthPlex in Lorton have already committed to hosting us in mid-October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a health-minded theme
(naturally!). Let us know if you have an interest in either sponsoring or hosting an upcoming Member Mixer Event or might want to sit for a CEO interview like the one our very own Terry Head of the International Association of Movers sat for not too long ago. Watch Here! Been looking for something different to do with your time? Why not spending it helping your own return on your Chamber investment? We still have a couple seats on the Board and a couple committee positions for just the right person(s) to fill. Don't be shy!

- Tom Repczynski, SFCC Chairman and Principal Attorney, Offit Kurman

Fairfax County Green Business Partners Program

In 2016, Fairfax County launched the Green Business Partners Program, which recognizes local companies that are leaders in sustainability. Membership is free, and Partners are featured on the Fairfax County website. It's a great way to be recognized for efforts that benefit both the environment and the bottom line. For more information and to download the application form, please visit the County's Green Business.

Short-Term Rentals

Is our ability to attract quality hotels to south Fairfax County in jeopardy?  What about the success of existing hotels such as the likes of SFCC member Embassy Suites?  Supervisor Storck reports that the County is working to create proposed zoning rules for what are called "short-term rentals," i.e. homes, condos and apartments rented out for less than 30 days on websites like Airbnb, Homeaway, VRBO, FlipKey, or Roomarama.
Supervisor Storck is seeking community feedback to help in developing the Board's proposal.  Constituents are invited to take this short, 12-question survey by August 31, 2017.  Additional information, including future public meeting dates, is available online, or by calling the Zoning Administration Division at 703-324-1314, TTY 711.

NOVA Arts/Cultural District Created

In an effort to grow arts and culture tourism, Fairfax County is joining with the Town of Occoquan and Occoquan Regional Park to create an arts and culture district, making it the  first such inter-jurisdictional district in the state . The district will allow the area to brand itself as a regional destination for tourism, commerce, and cultural  leisure activities.

The NOVA Arts and Cultural District was approved by the Board of Supervisors and will be officially established pending [approval by] the Town of Occoquan. A new state law that became effective July 1, permits the creation of inter-jurisdictional  arts and cultural districts.

The new district encompasses the 55-acre Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, the regional park and town.  While the new designation will create greater awareness, the region already delivers a rich offering of arts, culture and recreation.
