The Word

Mary Allen walks her son to school every morning. The route to school takes them along an empty lot that wasn’t well-maintained. Waist-high grass extending to the sidewalk had forced Mary and her son to walk in the street to avoid getting weeds stuck to their clothes. Frustrated, she contacted our office and asked if we could compel the property owner to clean up the area and keep it a little neater. Watch what happened next in our latest episode in the video series Weiss Works for You.

If, like Gregg, you live in Flamingo Park, you’ll have noticed an increase in planes flying over. That’s because the FAA on Monday implemented a new 24/7 year-round flight restriction stating no aircraft can operate within a one-nautical mile radius around Mar-a-Lago, irrespective of whether the president is in town or not. Meaning planes are no longer able to fly along Southern Boulevard and are instead directed north, shifting the noise burden to neighborhoods to the northeast of the airport.

When the president is in town, additional Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) will be in effect for the inner core, a 10-nautical-mile radius around PBI, as well as for the Outer Ring, the 10 to 30-nautical-mile area surrounding PBI. This means airspace is restricted or prohibited for most general aviation and drone operations, and for flights that are approved, pilots must comply with strict procedures. Gregg spoke to the newspaper about it and explained that it is still important to report noise issues when they occur. More on the restrictions and how to report noise issues

Residents of the Palmyra neighborhood, located just outside Boynton Beach, were notified earlier this year that the City of Boynton Beach intended to annex the area, making it part of the City. The City believed it had the legal authority to do so, citing its provision of supplying water to those living there. Feeling left out of the decision-making process and fearing a tax increase, several residents contacted our office asking Gregg to get involved. Following constructive conversations with the City Manager, the City decided to pause while the City and the County are exploring whether the County’s Water Utilities Department can take over the Boynton utility.

On Tuesday, the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) decided on a process to hire a new County Attorney who will replace Denise Coffman, who is set to retire in December. The County Attorney is one of just three contract employees who directly report to the BCC. The other two are the County Administrator and the County’s Internal Auditor. There are eight eligible candidates vying for the spot. By Thursday, commissioners will inform HR of their four top candidates. The finalists will have one-on-one interviews with the commissioners on Monday, October 27, followed by public interviews and the selection of a new County Attorney at the October 28 BCC workshop.

That’s a wrap.

Disaster Awareness & Recovery Tool

Report Damage Using the County's Official App

We're in the final stretch of hurricane season, but you'll want to keep this tool on your phone's home screen all year round. It's the Palm Beach County Disaster Awareness and Recovery Tool (PBC DART), and it provides residents with information and tools used to prepare for a disaster and with the ability to report damage to their home or business in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Damage reports help disaster managers get an immediate Countywide ā€œpictureā€ within hours of a disaster event to help prioritize response efforts. Meanwhile, you can read about Tropical Storm Melissa - the latest commotion in the ocean - here.

When you need a lawyer but can't afford one, AI is ready to research your issue and even draft complaints. But beware of hallucinations. That's the upshot of this article. It shows how people are increasingly turning to AI tools like ChatGPT for legal assistance, sometimes winning their cases by representing themselves with the help of generative AI - other times facing penalties due to inaccuracies in AI-generated legal documents.

District 2 Intern Kayla Barlow

In 2024, Kayla Barlow and her peers came to Commissioner Weiss seeking help in protecting their beloved beaches from microplastics on their shores. Kayla and her fellow Jupiter High students were working on ideas that could help curb plastic pollution. Their journey was recorded and has become part of a documentary by renowned filmmakers Tom Fitz and Katie Carpenter.

This experience sparked great motivation in Kayla. When she graduated from Jupiter High School, she chose to pursue a Political Science degree at Florida Atlantic University. She reached out to Commissioner Weiss once again, seeking to gain more valuable experience in her local government. She currently interns in our office one day a week.

As she looks to the future, Kayla plans on getting a master’s degree at Florida Atlantic University and searches for opportunities to make a difference in her community.

Outside of her studies, she enjoys spending her time on the Atlantic coast, where she grew up, by paddle boarding, snorkeling, surfing, and hiking. Among her favorite wildlife are sea turtle, manatees, sting rays, owls, and alligators.

Commish in the Community

Celebrations, anniversaries, meeting with agencies, recognizing community leaders, joining neighbors' festivities and going to neighborhood meetings ... Commissioner Weiss spends a lot of time in the community.

"As an elected official, I want to be part of the community I represent," said Commissioner Weiss. "I want to understand the issues in my district, and that's why I spend many evenings attending events to listen and learn."

If you'd like to invite Commissioner Weiss to your event, let us know.

PBI Concourse B Topping Out Ceremony

Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) marked a big milestone on October 16 with the ā€œtopping outā€ of the final phase of its Concourse B expansion. Gregg joined fellow commissioners, project partners, and community leaders for a ā€œsigning of the beamā€ ceremony — a symbolic send-off and a show of community pride before the beam was lifted into place. The $141 million project will add new gates, upgraded concessions, and modern amenities to boost capacity and improve the passenger experience while keeping PBI’s signature convenience and service. The expansion remains on schedule and is expected to open in 2027.

White Cane Awareness Day Walk

Florida Outreach Center for the Blind (FOCB) in Palm Springs had its Annual White Cane Awareness event on October 14 and Gregg joined with county leaders, students, and the general public for a walk along South Congress Avenue with the blind and visually impaired. The Palm Springs Police Department managed traffic to help marchers up the street safely while raising awareness about the White Cane Law. The FOCB has FREE, wonderful classes and training for the visually impaired and blind in multiple language. Learn more.

White Cane Bus Debut

During a break in the October 7 Board meeting, Gregg joined fellow commissioners and members of Lighthouse for the Blind to celebrate White Cane Awareness Day. Observed nationwide on October 15, the day recognizes the white cane as a powerful symbol of independence and safety for individuals who are blind or visually impaired—and reminds drivers to always yield to those using it for safe navigation.

Habitat For Humanity's New Home Office

Habitat for Humanity marked an exciting new chapter in its mission to build homes and hope across the region with a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 25 at its new offices on Military Trail in Lake Worth. Gregg joined in the celebration, a housewarming made possible through the generosity of Bank of America Palm Beach County, which donated a 10-year lease for the space, and RCC Associates, whose construction expertise brought the vision to life.
