County approves hotel deal over Gregg’s objection

At a September 29 Workshop, the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) voted 6-1 to approve a deal with Related Ross. This paves the way for an 18-story, 400-room hotel next to the County Convention Center. Gregg, who favored parts of the deal, voted against the proposal because he thought the presentation that preceded the vote was overly rosy when it assumed an annual growth rate of 5%. Gregg thinks the proposal does not provide adequate parking for guests and workers, and he expressed concerns about the deal’s structure that exempts the hotel from paying property taxes.

Here are the basics of the deal:

The county will spend $26 million to buy 1.8 acres from the developer. The developer will put down a $5 million deposit, so the county's net cost is $21 million. The developer will build the hotel. The county will own the land which it will lease back to the developer for up to 97 years. In return, the county will share in the profits of the hotel, provided that they exceed a threshold that increases annually. The developer will pay $1.1 million in base rent in year one, rising 3% a year. It will also lease parking spaces from the county’s garage for $1.8 million in the first year.

Gregg agrees that the hotel will help the convention center bring bigger conventions and more bed tax revenue and more visitor spending to the county. The profit sharing deal could pay off, but the devil’s in the details, and Gregg wasn’t sold.

Residents of the Grandview Heights Historic District spoke in opposition. They said the item was added to the agenda too late for the public to weigh in. That same group has also sued the City of West Palm Beach, arguing that the city did not follow its own code when it approved the hotel.

Oyster Ambassadors

In this newsletter we've been keeping you informed on the progress of the Palm Beach County Fishing Foundation’s (PBCFF) Oyster Shell Recycling & Restoration Program, which began in the spring of 2025. The Program reduces waste, cleans water and creates habitat. Here’s the latest:

The Fishing Foundation built an oyster shell curing station at MacArthur Beach State Park, and they couldn't ask for a better program partner. The park has been wonderfully supportive. Each week they collect shells from Cod & Capers (North Palm Beach), Twisted Tuna (Jupiter), Seminole Reef Grill (Juno), and The Breakers Resort and Venita Hotel (Palm Beach). Other restaurants have offered to join, and we're grateful, but PBCFF has maxed out on manpower and storage for now. Since the program began, they've gathered about 10 tons of shell, averaging 300 to 500+ pounds every week!

None of this happens without PBCFF's volunteers and paid interns, who help with shell pickups, outreach events, and Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) workshops and installations. The Fishing Foundation and its volunteers have led dozens of oyster programs and VOG-building workshops at schools, businesses, and fellow conservation groups, and the impact on young people has been especially rewarding.

Together with partners like the Village of North Palm Beach Environmental Committee, the City of Boca Raton Office of Sustainability, and the Eco-Scouts in Jupiter, PBCFF has built and deployed more than 700 VOGs across the county.

Their goal is to hit 1,000 by year's end.

PBCFF is led by Executive Director and Oyster Ambassador extraordinaire Tom Twyford.

Commish in the Community

Celebrations, anniversaries, meeting with agencies, recognizing community leaders, joining neighbors' festivities and going to neighborhood meetings ... Commissioner Weiss spends a lot of time in the community.

"As an elected official, I want to be part of the community I represent," said Commissioner Weiss. "I want to understand the issues in my district, and that's why I spend many evenings attending events to listen and learn."

If you'd like to invite Commissioner Weiss to your event, let us know.

White Cane Day

White Cane Day is observed annually nationwide on October 15th. The entire month is dedicated to highlighting the importance of the white cane as a critical tool for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, supporting their independence and ensuring their safety. On October 6th local leaders gathered with members of Lighthouse For The Blind for the White Cane Bus debut, where Gregg gave a proclamation declaring October 2026 as White Cane Safety Awareness Month.

Policy and Pancakes

Young professionals connected with community leaders including Gregg on Saturday, October 3rd at the Mandel Library to discuss local elections, voter registration, housing, healthcare, education, and more. Organized by the Urban League of Palm Beach County Professionals of Palm Beach North, the event focused on civic engagement covered policy issues that directly impact on our community.

Florida Association of Counties Recognition

The president of the Florida Association of Counties honored Gregg on September 17 at the 2026 Innovation and Policy Conference in Jacksonville with the Marlene Young Presidential Advocacy Award for his outstanding contributions, unwavering dedication, and exemplary service to our communities.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

Local leaders gathered at the Lake Worth Beach Cultural Plaza on September 11th to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Reflections were shared by Gregg and others, followed by the ringing of a bell 30 times in remembrance of the lives lost on that day in 2001.

Protecting Residents' Quality of Life

At a joint press conference with Congresswoman Lois Frankel at the airport on September 9th, Gregg addressed the FAA's proposed rule to change the flight restrictions over Mar-a-Lago from temporary to permanent. While he's always backed protecting the President during visits, Gregg used the airport press conference to repeat a point he's made since October 2025, when the temporary restrictions began: residents' quality of life has been negatively impacted, and must be safeguarded.

National Library Card Sign-up Month

September was National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and Gregg showed off his own library card September 8th while presenting a proclamation at the Okeechobee Blvd. branch of the Palm Beach County Library System. That's Dewey on his right, the official mascot of the Library System. Even though it's October now, it's never too late for you to sign up for a library card!
