Dear Friends,

Another week we have to engage and move through this season of isolation and challenges, this COVID 19 world. I want to remind us that each of us handles stress differently. Some are appreciating the new ways of worship and prayer online and others are not finding the two-dimensionality very fulfilling. God meets you where you are and together, with God, go and do what you can without guilt or “shoulds”.
This morning I was talking to our new music director, Dr. Mark Bennett. Mark “took over” just a few days ago. How hard to go forward without a choir to rehearse in person on a Thursday night! It is not only okay, but appropriate that these first few Sundays for Mark can be simple. He and the choir will get to know each other and adapt to virtual rehearsals and recordings. Remember that first Sunday, March 22, after churches were shut down? We went “live” on Facebook and Jeannie Cobb sang into her cellphone and I held up my cellphone at my lap top microphone! We have come a long way, but Mark is stepping into this season with more handicaps then any of us appreciate. Welcome, Mark, and we pray the best for you and our choir!

This Sunday we continue offering in person Communion under Special Circumstances and welcome you to receive the Bread from Heaven AND…

bring things for the St Luke’s Homeless Breakfast and Shower Ministry. The coordinator emailed Gayle Taylor, our Outreach Shepherd, that they need towels and washcloths and men’s pants and shorts sizes 32-36. (See details below to RSVP for Communion).

Hang in there!  God loves you!
And I love you,

Receive the Body of Christ
You are invited to receive the Body of Christ on Sundays in our St Francis Garden in a reserved spot for Holy Communion under Special Circumstances at 11, 11:15, 11:30, 11:45. Social distancing markers are in place and we ask you wear a mask. The wafer is in a paper cup on a tray, distanced from everyone.

Be together - 5 days a week, as well as Sundays.
Morning prayer twice-weekly, led by Paula+, and Compline three times per week, led by Jude+ and a team of lay leaders. Each service includes the traditional service, plus words from the leader, and explanations of the readings. They are prayerful and quiet, a far cry from the turmoil of the world, and medicine to help us heal and be comforted and inspired.

ISAIAH … in (only) 5 Sessions !!!!!
Next Tuesday, September 1st, 7:00 - 8:30 pm, our Bible study of ISAIAH begins! Hooray!

Isaiah is quoted more times in the New Testament than any other book in the Hebrew Bible. Jesus reads from Isaiah (Isa 61:1-2) as he begins his ministry and then declares that,
“Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Lk 4:21)

Why Isaiah?
Isaiah is a beautiful, powerful, poetic, disturbing, wild, inspiring, important book,
and I invite you to join in the fun of engaging with this text!!
There are five sessions:

  • Sept. 1, 7:00-8:30pm. - Overview, Historical Context, ISAIAH aloud w/recording. First Isaiah 1-39; Wrath and Recovery

  • Sept. 15, 7:00-8:30pm - Second Isaiah 40-55; The Suffering Servant and Jesus; Servant Songs; Poetry and Music

  • Sept. 29, 7:00-8:30pm - Second Isaiah 40-55; Suffering then and now; More Servant Songs; Quotes to remember

  • Oct. 6, 7:00-8:30pm - Third Isaiah 56-66; Hope; A Restored Covenant; Leadership Gone Awry; Restoration of the Faithful

  • Oct. 20, 7:00-8:30pm - Back to the Beginning: First Isaiah 1-39; Who did they say God is? Who do we say God is?

Note from Rev Jude: I am not an expert, at all, on Isaiah. This class will need your questions, insights, former knowledge, or first-time observations to make the experience meaningful.

No experience necessary; all brains welcome.  Please email me before Tuesday and I will send you the zoom link.
