Ascension Day and our continuing mission.

Today, May 26 is Ascension Day, often unobserved by Christians, probably because it happens on a Thursday. I suppose it also goes past because we have the sense that Jesus has “gone away.” Where did Jesus go? Is he beyond Jupiter or the farthest galaxy? Not at all! My understanding of the Ascension is that Jesus has entered the heavenly realm which stands right next to ours in time and space but is invisible to the senses. Jesus is now seated at the right hand of the Father, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come” (Eph 1:21).

Yet, if Jesus is ruling over all things, how do we explain the tragedies of Buffalo, Laguna Woods, and Uvalde TX? Sadly, not all things have been brought under the reign of Christ. That is why we pray “your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” That is why Jesus commands that repentance and forgiveness be proclaimed in his name to all nations (Lk 24:47). We must be empowered by the Spirit to call people to repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation (Lk 24:49, Acts 1:8). May the Holy Spirit come on us that we may witness to the way of love.

Prayers From Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry
Below is a prayer that has been adapted from a liturgy offered by Bishops United Against Gun Violence along with a video from our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry.

Most compassionate God, we hold before you all who have died from gun violence in our land. We remember especially the children and adults who were killed in Uvalde, Buffalo, and Laguna Woods. We lift our voices in sorrow and frustration knowing that every life is infinitely valuable to you. Receive all who have died into the arms of your mercy, bless those who mourn with the hope of eternal life, and work through our hearts and hands to bring about your justice and love on this earth. This we pray in the name of the one who overcame the power of death, your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
