We can hardly believe that Princess Diana's royal puppies are already 8 weeks old! They are now weaned from momma and just received their second round of puppy shots. This means they were finally able to move into the main shelter building and start experiencing more of the world around them.

We are making plans to get them scheduled for their spay and neuter surgeries so they can leave us for their new homes. It will be bittersweet for all of our staff who has been involved with their care, but our goal is always to say goodbye! There are already many applications on these adorable babies, but you may still fill out our online application to be considered in the event that someone backs out. We will start calling approved adopters to make arrangements once the surgery dates are set. We will not be holding or reserving any of the pups ahead of time. Your understanding and cooperation on this matter is appreciated.
Low cost spay & neuter assistance for low income individuals is available through our Murphy's program, with surgeries primarily done at Lake Dog and Cat Veterinary Hospital in Laurie, MO. Call 573-552-7743 and leave a message for information and referrals. Someone will return your call as soon as possible.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs end up in shelters every year. With all the chaos and uncertainty that 2020 and the coronavirus pandemic has brought, it would not be surprising for that number to reach much higher this year. October is recognized as National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month to bring needed attention to these animals in need. But what can you, as an individual, do to help???

ADOPT -- Of course the number one goal is to get every shelter dog adopted out into a loving forever home--not only does this help the dogs that are already in our care, but it opens up space to take in more. At OKK9, we don't let dogs sit with us to wither away for years. Because we are a small facility, if a dog has been with us for a while and had no interested adopters, we work with several larger Missouri organizations such as Wayside Waifs in Kansas City, Five Acres Animal Shelter in St Charles and Pawportunities in Blue Springs to transfer them out for a better opportunity to find a family. Most of our transferred dogs are in a home within a week or two!

VOLUNTEER -- If you love animals but are not in a position to adopt, OKK9 has many volunteer opportunities. You can work directly with the dogs and cats at the shelter or at our thrift store, where all the money raised goes to the care of our animals. Stop by either building during regular business hours and talk to us about how you can help!

DONATE -- Financial contributions are always welcome, but we understand that many people are not in the position to just write a check. There are so many other ways you can contribute! If you are cleaning out your closets or garage, drop off those items that you no longer need at our thrift store...and then pop in the store to do a little shopping while you're there. Has your pet gotten picky and refuses to eat the food you bought? Bring that unused food to the shelter for our pet food pantry to help others in need. And while you are running errands, keep an eye out for our donation boxes at many lake area businesses--all that change adds up!

SHARE -- There is one big thing you can do to help that costs absolutely nothing but a few minutes of your time. When you see our posts on social media, give them a LIKE and SHARE. Every comment and interaction with our posts on FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM helps increase our visibility. You never know when someone may see the post you shared and meet their new best friend!
Come in and shop for Fall! Fall clothing is now out on the sales floor. Fall and Halloween decor and costumes are out and won't last long. Come out and shop while the selection is best!

Volunteers are always needed at the store. We have a great crew to work with--come join us! Have fun while making money for the care of our shelter animals.
If you wish to help support OKK9 at this time in a "social distancing" approved manner, monetary contributions can be made using the DONATE button on our Facebook page.
Our animals appreciate you!

Ashley Henry began her journey with us in October of 2017. She is currently our facility's Medical Supervisor. It has been a long road of specialized learning and remarkable experiences. These last three years have been a bouquet of heartwarming moments, sprinkled with all the colors of human emotion.

Ashley sums up the experience, "I never thought I would have the ability to love them and then let them go, but it really is the most rewarding feeling to watch them flourish and see them fall in love with their new families. It's like every single day is payday!"

We thank you immensely, Ashley, for dedicating yourself to improving the lives of all creatures, both big and small.
The OKK9 Board of Directors meeting is the third Wednesday of each month at 3:30pm. Meetings are held in the shelter building's assessment room and are open to the public.
Our online adoption application makes it easier for potential adopters to apply for a new family member! Click the "Adopt, Don't Shop" photo to fill out and submit the form directly from your phone or computer.
Last month we shared that the Speed on the Water ladies raised $716 for OKK9 at the Shootout Street Party...well, a lot happened shortly after that!
The day after that event, an anonymous donor added an additional $100 to the funds. A generous lady named Cheryl Sanders decided to give the difference to make the amount raised an even $1000. THEN...Mike Otten and Jeremy Hall, the amazing co-owners of Alley Cat's Pizzeria and Pub in Lake Ozark, announced that they were matching the donation with another $1000. Lastly, Jason Johnson and Matt Trulio from Speed on the Water kicked in another $200 for a GRAND TOTAL OF $2200 raised for the shelter animals!!!

Christy Wright, representing Speed on the Water, and Mike Otten visited the shelter for a short tour of our facilities and to present a check to shelter manager, Angi Uber. We are overwhelmed with the generosity of everyone involved in making this donation possible.
