Sharing Our Faith - Sister John Martin Fixa, O.P.
|
On the evening of Saturday, October 27th, Sister John Martin Fixa, O.P. died peacefully at St. Elizabeth’s Dominican Convent in Oakland, California.
She began her career as a teacher and principal, mainly in the Bay Area. Sr, Johnny, as she was lovingly known, battled lung cancer for 7 years. This past Thursday, she decided she was done fighting and went into hospice care. Surrounded by her fellow sisters who sang her into heaven, both in person and over the phone, God gave her body rest from its illness and she passed away on Saturday night.
Our school would not have continued to exist if it were not for the vision of Sr. Johnnie and the other Dominican sisters who saw the need to support the inner city Dominican schools in L.A. and the Bay Area back in the mid 90s when enrollments began to decline and the economy was failing.
Sr. Johnnie was the Founder and Executive Director of Vision of Hope from 1995 until 2015 when her health forced her to take a less stressful role in the organization. However, she continued to work tirelessly to make sure each school had as much tuition assistance as possible. Individuals and foundations found it very difficult to say no to Sr. Johnnie because she was so passionate about our schools.
Under her direction, a permanent endowment of 9.2 million dollars was established for eight Dominican inner city schools. The interest from this endowment is what provides just over $100,000 of our tuition assistance each year through the Dominican Sisters’ Vision of Hope.
We have lost a true champion for our school. I’m sure Sr. Johnnie and our Sr. Mara Anne will watch over us from heaven.

More Halloween Info:
Students may wear appropriate costumes on Wednesday, October 31st to celebrate Halloween. Costumes may not be violent, scary, or too high or low cut. No bare midriffs are allowed and no violent weapons. If you have a question about a costume, please ask your child's teacher for approval.
Students will begin the day as usual, then come out at 8:30 for our annual costume parade. Parents are welcome to attend. Parents who are participating in Trunk or Treat may drive onto campus at 10:15 so set up their cars and decorate their trunks. We can't wait to see who has the BEST TRUNK for 2018!!!
Students will come out and 'Trick or Treat' at all the trunks. The students really enjoyed Trunk or Treat last year, especially the interactive trunks where they had to play a game to earn the candy. Thanks to all the parents who are participating this year and making Halloween extra fun for our school community!
Please remember we have 12:30 Dismissal on Halloween and there is NO DAY CARE available after school. Also, Schwartz Catering will not be open on Halloween, but one of our classes will be selling goodies in the morning.

VIRTUS TRAINING
Parents who plan to volunteer at school during the coming school year must be Virtus trained. Virtus is the child safety training program that all adults who work and volunteer around children at church or school must complete. It focuses on appropriate interactions with children. There is no cost to you. Virtus certification must be updated every four years through a 1 1/2 hour re-certification class. You must complete Virtus 1 before doing a re-certification. The safety of our children is extremely important to all. Please be sure to attend a training if you plan on volunteering/helping out at school.
To find locations for Virtus training please click on the link below and scroll to (Archdiocese of) Los Angeles location. St. Ignatius falls under the San Fernando Region, but you may attend a Virtus class in any of the five Regions in LA County.
Please be sure to obtain a certificate and bring it to the school office so we can make a copy for our files.
All Staff, Parent Board, Room Parents, and Volunteers must be Virtus trained for the safety of our students.

Financial Responsibilities
A friendly reminder to all families who are making tuition payments on the 5th of the month that payment is coming up next week..
Our program cannot run with out everyone's cooperation in paying the tuition payments that were agreed upon in the family contract. We are so grateful that you value your child's Catholic education and make your consistent payments so that our teachers and staff can receive their salaries. Our teacher are paid well under what public school teachers make, and work just as hard. Thank you for your payments.

Did You Know? ... Code of Christian Conduct
Code of Christian Conduct Covering Students, Parents, Guardians and Other Responsible Adults:
All schools in the Archdiocese are intended to be environments that educate, nurture and support students according to the basic Christian principles of charity and love of neighbor. Everyone involved in the development of children and youth – teachers, administrators, parents, family and friends – is required to behave in accordance with these principles.
Students can best receive a quality, morally based education if students, parents/guardians, and school officials work together.
