The More You Know:

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm is a favorite amongst the kids who explore our Children’s Garden! This herb is in the Mint family and is native to Europe, North Africa, and West Asia, but has been naturalized all over the World. In ancient times, Lemon Balm was used to heal wounds and make soothing wines. Today, teas made with Lemon Balm are used to help calm anxiety and promote sleep.

Did you know? The scientific name for Lemon Balm is Melissa officinalis, and the genus name (Melissa) is derived from the Greek word for Honey bee! The ancient Greeks believed there was a strong connection between Lemon Balm and bees, so much that they would rub the herb on hives to make the bees feel welcome.
