Cape Cod White Ribbon Campaign
Brings Men Into Action | |
|
The White Ribbon global campaign was formed in 1991 by a group of men in response to a massacre that occurred in 1989 at the École Polytechnique (a public research university affiliated with the University of Montreal). Fourteen women were murdered in a mass anti-feminism shooting by one perpetrator, who during the massacre also took his own life. The global White Ribbon movement, now active in 60 countries, is a calling BY MEN - TO MEN, to help end male violence against women and girls.
In 2007, Jane Doe, Inc. (The Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence) led the establishment of the Massachusetts White Ribbon Day Campaign, expanding its efforts to end all forms of gender-based violence.
This March 2024, Independence House celebrates the 11th Anniversary of the Cape Cod White Ribbon Campaign, brought to our community in 2013 with the collaboration of the Yarmouth Police Department, Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office, and in 2023 joined by the Barnstable County Sheriff's Department.
Independence House, along with our collaborative Cape Cod White Ribbon Campaign partners are calling ALL MEN and BOYS (and all genders who support these efforts) to join us in a series of 1, 2, or 3 events detailed below during the month of March. Together we will learn, we will talk, and we will pledge to be part of the solution in ending violence against women and all gender-based violence.

HOTLINE VOLUNTEERS
The Independence House hotline is staffed 24-hours a day, 7-days per week. Volunteer advocates provide immediate response to any physical or emotional crisis arising from abuse or sexual assault.
Advocates also provide safety resources that assist callers in crisis, including shelter search, and community resources that the caller can follow up with when appropriate.
|
MEDICAL & POLICE ACCOMPANIMENT | |
Independence House offers specialized support to victims of sexual violence seeking medical attention through our Rape Crisis Program.
An Independence House specially trained rape crisis volunteer will meet a victim of sexual violence at either Cape Cod or Falmouth Hospital or at any police station in the 15 towns on Cape Cod and offer free and confidential information and support.
The Independence House specially trained rape crisis counselor will work closely with the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) and help the survivor of the assault understand the medical examination process and options.
|
|
|
ALL interested volunteers are interviewed; must provide information to process a CORI and SORI check; and provide references.
Independence House volunteers are required to complete a 45-hour volunteer training program. This program will provide you with the knowledge and tools to successfully assist survivors of both domestic or sexual violence.
Training takes place over a set number of days/weeks through individual live modules. We are working to provide our next volunteer training with a hybrid option on some modules.
