SMSDC advocates for Minority Business Enterprises during MBE Public Policy Day!

On March 15th, SMSDC along with the other two Texas regional councils, HMSDC & DFWMSDC visited the State Capitol in Austin, TX to educate lawmakers on the impact minority-owned business enterprises (MBEs) make on our state's economy. MBEs from the State of Texas joined in on the effort.

Corporate members, certified minority business enterprises and historically underutilized businesses (HUBs) of the 3 regional Councils in partnership with the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) met with their elected representatives and shared their positions on legislation that impacts business in our state and increases opportunities for everyone to build wealth and experience prosperity in Texas.

Overall, it was a very successful day at the State Capitol. If you missed it, please take a look at the photo gallery on our website.

We are getting closer and closer to our 1st conference in 3 years! Please join us at the next in-person event on June 21-23rd, Premier Face Time Expo & Golf Tournament. Registration is now open! We are thrilled to once again host our biggest in-person event of the year! This event is a networking forum designed to connect Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) with corporations that are looking for procurement opportunities with diversity suppliers. With educational seminars, exciting speakers, networking connections, an interactive trade show and an intriguing golf tournament....THIS IS THE EVENT YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS!

Visit our website at www.smsdc.org for details and registration. Early bird registration ends on May 26th.

I hope to see all of our certified MBEs, corporate member and community partners at our upcoming events! We have missed interacting in-person and are ready to see you again soon!

Sincerely,

Karen Box

From your MBEIC Chair:

I am honored to serve in the capacity as MBEIC Chair for SMSDC. April has been a great month for me as I transition into my new role. I have heard from many MBE’s who have shared words of encouragement as well as new ideas. I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months and truly helping you get the most of your certification.

I started the month by joining the SMSDC team on April 4th at our state capitol to meet with legislators and let our voice be heard in opposition of Texas HB 5140, HB 5127, SB 17, SB 2313. If passed, these bills will eliminate efforts for inclusion of minorities in state and local government codes and programs for jobs, contracts, college admissions and DEI activities. While there, we met with delegations from the DFW MSDC and worked alongside each other to have effective communications with legislative staff. Please keep an eye out for updates on these bills and ensure your voice is heard by joining future delegations to our capitol. The bill can be followed here. https://fastdemocracy.com/bill-search/tx/88/bills/TXB00066559/#overview

We are currently preparing for our May 18th MBEIC event. As soon as our agenda is finalized, SMSDC will be communicating more information.

I hope to see all of you very soon!

Respectfully,

Nicole Navarro Velesiotis
