We are in our second week of our September series: Back to the Beginning: Genesis & the ministry of members. We started last week at the literal beginning, Genesis 1, where we explored the ways that the creation story clarifies just as much as to what humanity is NOT created for (slavery, exploitation, violence) as to what is IS designed for (harmony, rest, equilibrium). This week we move to one of the first families: Abraham, Sarah and their son, Isaac. You can follow along here. The near-sacrifice of Isaac is one of Genesis' most dramatic stories and served as the origin story for how and why the ancient Israelites moved away from the common practice of child sacrifice. The abuse that Genesis 22 addresses naturally intersects with our own experiences of physical violence in our lives and in our world. Our bodies can store trauma for years often re-activating when whenever we attempt to talk about violence in our modern days, even if we are physically safe while doing so, even if we are in a sanctuary while doing so. We follow the Scriptures where they take us because we hold fast to the belief that the forces of peace have the ability to show up in any circumstance. After worship on Sunday, I will host a Genesis 22 Debrief (Zoom) at 3pm where we can ask questions and share insights together. I would love to see you there. The 36th Westminster Art Festival, October 17 to 19 is just over six weeks away. We are very busy and excited for this year’s Show! We have a wonderful group of artists who will be participating…some new and some returning who we know you will be happy to see.
This year, in addition to featuring all the artists, we will be including music and demonstrations all three days of the Festival:
· Friday evening, 6 to 8 pm - Gail Gage Jazz will be returning for the artist reception.
· Saturday, 9 to 10 am - Marc Vickery, our featured artist, will discuss his love of wood turning in the Sanctuary.
· Saturday, 1 to 3 pm - Thomas Bishop, vocalist, will sing and play soft rock, ballads, and country music on his acoustic guitar.
· Sunday, noon to 2 - David Jay will entertain us with oldie croon music, such as Moon River, Over the Rainbow, and other enjoyable music.
· Sunday, 3:30 to 4:30 - Fusion Trio with Angie, Juan, and Lina will entertain with a wonderful variety of serious and lighthearted classical music. Additionally, Ariana Recher will perform in a set of 4-handed piano works with Angie. Free will donations will be accepted to support the Westminster Music Series fund.
As always, we will need many volunteers to help with all areas of the Show. We will have a table and display at the Fall Harvest Festival on Sunday, September 28 for signups, and there will be a link to sign-up on the website soon. You can email us at wpcfafestival.com with your availability or talk to Sheila and Doreen. We appreciate everyone’s help!
If you want to see our wonderful Art Festival continue in 2026 for its 37th year, we are going to need leaders for artist relations, publicity, volunteer recruitment, and display. Doreen and I will work with new volunteers, but it is time for the Festival to have fresh new and younger leadership.

Urgent Need: Peanut Butter. After a busy week, our supply of this popular item is critically low, with only two jars remaining. We urgently need multiple jars to restock.
Other urgently needed food items include:
- Canned chili
- beef stew
- baked beans
- Soup (all varieties)
Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated and allow us to fill specific gaps. Please make donations payable to "Food Bank."
The need for our services continues to grow. We are serving more qualifying shoppers than ever, a trend exacerbated by rising food costs and a drastic reduction in supplies from Marion Polk Food Share.

We are reorganizing the office workroom to make it more useful. The large wooden desk will be donated, so all the items on it and around it on the floor need to be moved as soon as possible.
We will display the items that haven't been claimed on two Sundays - Sept. 14 and 28.
You may take what you need. Anything left at that point (Sept. 30th) will be donated.
We are brainstorming ideas of how best to use the open space after the desk is moved out. If you have ideas, please submit them to the office by September 30th.

In this stewardship season, I am contemplating a number to write on my pledge card.
Psalm 24:1 reminds us that everything in the world belongs to God. “The earth is the LORD’S and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it.”
Everything that I enjoy in life, like fresh air to breathe, water to drink, freshly picked blackberries, sunsets, my home, the money in my bank account, publications that I authored, etc. all belong to God. And I happily remind myself that I am a child of God.
God trusts that I will use the earth and everything in it wisely. And God trusts me to return a portion of what God has given me by giving to my church.
I know in my gut that the money I give WPC helps close the gap between the world the way it is and the world as it should be. God works to transform the world through WPC.
I believe that writing a number on my pledge card is an act of faithfulness to God, who has always been faithful to WPC and to me.

The Congregational Vitality Committee (CVC) is reminding everyone that the Westminster Photo Directory is being updated this summer. The first directory was published in December, 2023, and the plan is to provide an updated version for the congregation twice a year.
There are three reasons why you might be interested:
1. You missed getting your name, contact information, and/or photo submitted last fall, or
2. You need to correct or update your contact information, or
3. You want your photo updated or added.
There is a “Seasonal Photo Selfie Spot” set up in Boulder Hall , and it is available each Sunday for the remainder of the summer. Here are the guidelines:
1. Use your own camera/cell phone (there should be lots of folks to help out during coffee hour)
2. Submit your photo to office@salemwestpres.org; include your name in the subject line.
3. You may also submit your name/contact info/photo at anytime during the month of August to office@salemwestpres.org.
This is for anyone who wants to update any information already in the directory or for anyone who has not had their name included before. The newest version of the Westminster Church Photo Directory will be published in late September, so any information to be included needs to be sent to the church office email address (office@salemwestpres.org) on or before August 31, 2025.
