URGENT! PROJECT TRANSFORMATION BUS TRANSPORTATION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We still need drivers and ride-alongs to operate both buses this summer for Project Transformation. Currently, we only have enough committed volunteers to operate one bus.

Two buses can transport 26 children. With only one bus, two runs will be necessary, but we will not be able to reach the children living farther away due to time constraints.

The Mint in the Garden

This spring, the mint in our garden has been busy. It started outside our raised beds as a few modest sprigs, but now it has crossed into them, coming up between sprigs of thyme, rising beside the sage and lining the edges. When I started digging, I discovered that what looks like a scattering of little plants is actually one vast network. Beneath the surface, the mint runs in channels, sending out runners in every direction, looking for any patch of soil where it might sprout.

This could be seen as a problem. Mint is famously difficult to contain, and gardeners have long warned about its enthusiasm. But this spring I have come to see it differently. The truth is I love mint. I love the way it perfumes my hands when I brush against it, and what it does to a glass of summer tea. Instead of an unwanted weed, I have begun to think of it as a virtue pushing up through the soil where it was not expected, adding fragrance and beauty. And it began to remind me of something we already know.

Kindness, like mint, has a way of spreading where we did not plant it. So does respect, and patience, and the quiet decision to assume the best of another person. When we cultivate these virtues, even in small ways, they do not stay where we set them. They run underneath our days, sending shoots into conversations we never anticipated. They show up at the grocery store, in the parking lot, in the late night phone call from a friend who needs to be heard. They appear, fragrant and green, in moments we could not have planned.

Paul writes to the church in Galatia about the fruit of the Spirit, naming love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He does not describe these as accomplishments we manage on our own. He describes them as fruit, which means they grow. They take root in us and spread, sometimes in ways we do not see until we go looking.

When we begin to dig, as any gardener knows, the root system is more substantial than expected. The sprig of kindness offered to a stranger is part of a deeper, hardier life. The patient word with a grieving neighbor is connected, by hidden channels, to every prayer we have offered, every scripture that has shaped us, every quiet grace we have received. These virtues are not accidents. They have been growing all along, waiting to sprout.



The Spirit is at work beneath the surface, weaving us into one another and into the goodness of God. We do not always see the network, but it is there. May we trust the hidden growth of Christ's grace this week. May we tend the small sprigs of kindness and respect that appear in our path. And may we be surprised, again and again, by the fragrance that rises when we least expect it.
