A Note

May 2023

Dear Friends,

We celebrate Pentecost this year on Sunday, May 28, when we remember the birthday of the Church in 33AD. The Holy Spirit rested on the disciples as tongues of flame, and they were given the ability to preach the Good News in ways that everyone gathered in Jerusalem understood in their own language. These languages and cultures were represented by every culture and country that was located around the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It was a sign to the Church, then and now, that God’s hope is that the Good News of God’s love in Jesus Christ, be spoken in a variety of languages and ways that include everyone. How will we speak in a language and way so that the next generation knows God’s love for them?

Churches around the country have seen a decrease in church attendance, especially among children, youth and young adults during and after the pandemic. One of the paths forward that is being gleaned in this post-pandemic landscape, is that churches need to give focus, attention and funding on the places where the church engages the greater community. These places are often expressions of compassion, social justice, and service to those in need. One of the hallmarks of healthy Methodism is the compassionate ways the church cares for those outside of the immediate congregation.

Friends, your ongoing gifts, tithes and offerings, help Chatham UMC reach beyond the walls of our church and engage the greater community. This happens in our back parking lot through food distribution, through our online presence of our Sunday services, through providing space and support to young families through our Chatham Methodist Preschool, through intentional interfaith partnerships that express care for the Common Good, and so much more. Thank you for your partnership and faithfulness! The Holy Spirit continues a very long tradition of inspired ministries here at Chatham UMC.

Let us pray one of the oldest prayers of the Church: Come Holy Spirit! In the name of the Triune One,

Rev. Jeff Markay
