Ridge High School Volunteers

For the second year in a row, Ridge High School sent over volunteer students and a volunteer chaperone to help CUMC with a list of tasks.

This year, the 10 students and chaperone focused on heavy manual labor - they weeded basically every bed outside the church (but for Memorial Garden) and CMP, including the stone beds, loaded and mulched most of those beds after weeding, and also pulled out large dead plants and shrubs around the property.  The students and chaperone were incredibly hard-working, enthusiastic, friendly, and successful. Those beds looked fantastic after the work of the volunteers, and it's always important in the Garden State to take care of weeds and beds and dead plants as often as possible!

Special thanks to Donald Underhill and Robbie for getting supplies and mulch ready in advance so the volunteers could focus on the backbreaking work they completed.

Church Can Grow With 'Community Services'

The United Methodist News recently featured an article about a vision for present and future ministry that indicates that Chatham UMC is on the right path. When a church's mission and compassion is focused on services provided for those in need in the greater community, it is win-win for those receiving the service, and for the church. What are your thoughts?

Massacre at Sand Creek describes the sad story of events that led to the killing of Native Americans in Colorado Territory in November 1864. While small on the scale of battles during the American Civil War, it nonetheless garnered lots of public attention at the time and still raises controversy today. Promises made by the US Government were broken, settlers felt threatened, and Indians were seen as uneducated savages. While the events described here are not unique, it is nonetheless disturbing to hear how Methodists participated in such tragedies.

“On the morning of November 29, 1864, Colonel John Milton Chivington [a Methodist minister serving in the US Army] gave the command that led to the slaughter of 230 peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho – primarily women, children, and elderly, camped under the protection of the U.S. government along Sand Creek in Colorado Territory [who were] flying both an American flag and a white flag.” (from the book cover.)

A highlight in Roberts’ book is the discussion of the cultures of the ‘white man’ (typically a European) and of the Native American. Europeans saw life as linear, a progression of events and discoveries, one after the other. Improvements and advancements were key to growth for Europeans. For Native Americans, however, as Roberts notes, “Life was a transcendent cycle, not an irreversible line. For the Native American, every creature in Creation has place and spirit. There is an essential interrelatedness in all of Creation.” People who did not fit into the European model were moved or eliminated.

Roberts’ book is part of a follow-up in 2012 by the United Methodist Church to study and provide a full disclosure of the events of the Sand Creek Massacre.
