On The Threshold of Transformation: Daily Meditations for Men

By Richard Rohr

At September’s Men’s Breakfast Jeff introduced us to this wonderful collection of daily meditations. Richard Rohr, who last spoke at CUMC in 2017, is a Franciscan priest and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation, located in Albuquerque, NM. His Daily Meditations is a journey toward transformation.

Male spirituality isn’t typically seen as a “thing”, but it is. At the risk of sounding sexist, I’ll say that men are more typically outwardly focused, with competitive sports (and combat?) being an example of that. Men are less likely than women to be inwardly focused. Rohr takes us on a journey inward, to transform pain, hurt, and failure into love and acceptance – of ourselves and of others. Here are a couple examples.

From Day 10, “Every man wants to discover something, to find what is missing here by journeying to a new place. We forget that we take the same old self to the new place…. Eventually, the young man realizes that what he is searching for cannot be found externally. Nothing outside the self can substantially change us or make us happy unless it realigns us internally.” From Day 70, “Biblical faith is the freedom not to know, not to have answers for everything…faith is actually having the security to be insecure.” Each daily meditation concludes with a question or two, as a challenge to go inward such as, “How do I experience faith? How do others react to my faith?”

While I haven’t completed all 366 meditations, I know already that this is an excellent guide for men, and perhaps women, who are open to the possibility of transformation, to seeing themselves and things differently. Being an adult and having had some life experiences will help make this book more beneficial in my view. I’ll see that our library gets a copy.
