Pastor's Corner
This week our church begins something new and very old all at once. On Thursday, May 28, the interns of Project Transformation will gather at Lakeside for their training, and on June 9 we will welcome fifty children and twenty youth for a summer of reading, laughter, and learning. As we prepare, we find ourselves standing in a stream of Methodist tradition that flows back to a kitchen in Epworth, England.
In that kitchen, three hundred years ago, Susanna Wesley spent six hours a day teaching her children to read. She believed, in an age that did not, that girls should be taught the same as boys. One of her household rules stated that no girl be taught to work until she could read well. She had received a classical education from a father who believed his daughter deserved it, and she passed that conviction on. Her daughters and her sons learned together at her table. Her sons John and Charles would go on to lead a movement that changed the world, and they would say, again and again, that it was their mother's faith, her prayers, and her patient teaching that had shaped them.
We sometimes think of Methodism as a movement born in the streets of England, in field preaching and class meetings and hymns sung loud enough to shake the rafters. All of that is true. But before any of it, there was a mother teaching her children to read by candlelight, convinced that the mind and the soul belong together. From the beginning, we have been a people who believe that literacy is holy work. John Wesley founded schools, printed inexpensive books so ordinary people could afford them, and taught, as his mother had taught him, that learning to read was part of learning to love and live for God.
Project Transformation belongs to this story. Each summer this United Methodist ministry sends young adults into churches like ours to spend their days with children, reading alongside them, praying for them, and reminding them by every patient hour that they are loved. The young adults are formed in ministry. The children grow in literacy and confidence. The church discovers, again, that its building is most itself when filled with the laughter of children who are learning. What a privilege it is to host the Pine Bluff chapter of PT again this year, especially as it expands for the first time in Arkansas to include middle school students.
You are invited to be a part of this essential work. Throughout the Summer, there will be opportunities to read with a child, provide a meal, ride a bus, encourage, support, and above all, pray. Pray for our interns as they begin training this Thursday. Pray for the fifty children and twenty youth who will fill our halls. Pray for Pastor Sam as she faithfully and joyfully leads the program here and in Little Rock. And remember Susanna, who knew, long before us, that when we teach a child to read, we are doing the work of the gospel.
