BACK TO SCHOOL TOOLS

Redwood City Public Library is here to support educational success for students of all ages in the coming year (and every year)! We are highlighting the educational resources and programs available at Redwood City Public Library with this newsletter.

While summer break has come to an end, there is still time to participate in the Summer Learning Challenge. Finishers are entered into a $1,000 education scholarship prize drawing. Bring your finished log into any library in San Mateo County through August 31 to enter.

On our Parent & Teacher page, we have a wealth of resources for students of all ages, including research databases, eBooks, videos, language learning resources and more. For research projects, with curriculum-related and age appropriate online content, we offer grade-level and subject-level resources: find them on our Student Research page. For language learners, try Pronunciator, a fun and free way to learn any of 300+ languages with self-directed lessons, live teachers and more.

If you are a teacher, home school educator, preschool or day care provider who lives or works in Redwood City, you are eligible for a Teacher Card. With a teacher card, you are able to keep your classroom and personal use material on separate library records.

Last but not least, if you are reading this and don't have a library card to access our resources, GET ONE HERE. Happy back to school!

ESL CONVERSATION GROUP

Learning isn't just limited to schools! The library supports students of all ages in their lifelong learning journey.

Our weekly ESL Conversation Group is almost back from summer break! Starting September 2, the group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 5–6pm online via Zoom.

Created over six years ago, the group provides a supportive environment for strengthening English conversation and listening skills. Students or individuals with varying levels of English proficiency are welcome.

NEWS FROM THE FOUNDATION

The theme for 2025 Banned Books Week and Redwood City Library Foundation's 4th Annual Pub Crawl on October 8 is “Censorship is so 1984. Read for Your Rights.” Current efforts to ban books and information are a truth close to fiction – namely, the extreme censorship by an oppressive regime depicted in George Orwell’s cautionary tale 1984

Libraries provide opportunity and enrichment for everyone in their communities. Yet in recent years, libraries have been facing unprecedented challenges: bans on library materials and programs, threats to cut funding, and state legislation that criminalizes librarians for doing their jobs. The war on books is also a war on librarians. Take advantage of early bird pricing on tickets here

On September 22, the Library Foundation is hosting a free screening  of “The Librarians,” a powerful new documentary that uncovers this growing crisis and spotlights the courageous educators fighting back. The film is a rallying cry for intellectual freedom. Join us from 5:30-7:30pm in the Downtown Library community room for the movie, followed by a discussion with Library Director Derek Wolfgram. The film is FREE with RSVP: https://paybee.io/in-person-event/rclf/4
