Honoring Our Rich Choral Tradition

Join us on March 23 as the City Choir of Washington tells the story of America through the rich history of our choral traditions. The lovely acoustics and charming atmosphere of the Church of the Epiphany in downtown Washington, DC will provide the perfect backdrop.

From the heights of the classical style to homegrown innovations in spirituals, folk music, country, and jazz, from Broadway to the silver screen, City Choir’s a cappella exploration of “100 Years of Great American Song” honors the inspirational, intricate tapestry that is woven into our country’s musical landscape.

Come explore the power of song with works by Aaron Copland, Moses Hogan and more. Dive into the lush depths of the American Songbook with Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Leigh Harline (of “When You Wish Upon a Star” fame). Find inspiration in our city with Washington, DC composers Duke Ellington, Ysaÿe Barnwell, and City Choir’s own Robert Shafer. And conclude your journey with us on a note of joy and hope as we look towards the “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” (imagined by Dolly Parton) and an “Unclouded Day” (promised by the ebullient gospel hymn).

Erin Freeman Introduces the Concert

Church of the Epiphany:

Some of the Best Acoustics in Town!

Don’t miss hearing the City Choir of Washington in a beautiful, historic space that has, as Erin Freeman says, “some of the best acoustics in town.” The Church of the Epiphany, established in 1842, is located in downtown Washington, DC, a 5-minute walk from Metro Center station. Graced with lovely stained glass, a notable bell tower (Epiphany’s bells have tolled for the inauguration of every president since Calvin Coolidge), and glorious acoustics, the Church of the Epiphany has seen its share of Washington, DC history. In 1862, President Lincoln attended the funeral of General Frederick Lander at Epiphany. Later that year, the church was used as a hospital for Union troops. In 1942, President Roosevelt attended Christmas services.

Today, the Church of the Epiphany is a highly desired performance venue, and one that is particularly suited to a cappella choral music. The church maintains a robust concert schedule, to which City Choir is delighted to contribute.

We hope you will come explore this beautiful venue on March 23. The church is easily accessible by metro (Metro Center station); although street parking is limited downtown, there are many garages available (including one right next to the church and another directly across the street).
