Hello and welcome to our monthly newsletter!

New life is stirring all around us, despite the unusual bouts of cold we've had these last few months. Some of my favorite nutritive, local herbs (some would call them weeds) are popping up out of the soil giving us a blast of green and minerals and providing gentle detoxification.   Nettle tops, cleavers, and dandelion leaf are some of my favorites.  All three support the kidneys; cleavers also supports the lymphatic system, and all are high in chlorophyll and minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. All three herbs are in our Allergy Ease Tea, not coincidentally.

For some people, spring is a double-edged sword, where the increasing light and new growth brings new energy and movement, but the pollens also start flying, and seasonal allergies begin to flair.  If you are such a person, or you have family or friends who suffer from allergy symptoms, it is time to start taking herbal antihistamines, herbal decongestants, doing gentle cleanses to eliminate toxins, taking local honey or bee pollen, and reducing inflammation in general on the body.  This can go a long way in reducing or eliminating allergic responses.

Do these things work ?  Absolutely.  I have many customers who have found a form of herbs that they take on a consistent basis that have given them significant relief.

Some prefer several cups of tea (nettle leaf or our Allergy Ease Tea) per day, some find a combination of tea and capsules (see below) to work best, some use a neti pot regularly and drink the tea, some eat a teaspoon per day of local, raw honey (how can you get closer than Kenmore, where our honey comes from?), some simply prefer the capsules daily.  You can find what works for you!

Come in and find out how herbs and natural solutions might help you, and read on for more information.

Tea of the Month:
Allergy Ease Tea

Allergy Ease Tea
Allergy Ease Tea

Filled with green herbal goodness, as well as some of the best herbs for reducing nasal congestion & inflammation, this blend is designed to be consumed several times/day leading up to the allergy season and then taken on a maintenance basis (1-2 times/day) as needed.  It is also affective, however, when begun during allergy season and with allergy symptoms.

An easy way to consume this much tea is to brew a quart or 2 in advance, strain, and then store in the fridge.  Have a french press?  This makes a great way to brew tea in larger quantities.

Nettle has natural antihistamine properties, eyebright tones and strengthens sinus membranes and reduces eye secretions, green tea acts as a antiinflammatory and antioxidant, yerba santa reduces sinus and chest congestion.

Contains: nettle leaf, green tea, eyebright, yerba santa, peppermint, dandelion leaf, goldenrod, and hawthorn leaf & flower.

Herb of the Month:
Nettle

Urtica dioica, commonly called nettle or stinging nettle, is an herbaceous, rhizomatous perennial flowering plant in the family Urticaceae. It is native to Europe, Asia, northern Africa, and western North America, and introduced elsewhere. It has a square stem and fine toothed, tapered, somewhat heart-shaped leaves that are 3-15 cm. Thin catkins of tiny green flowers grow from the leaf axils. The leaves and stem are covered in tiny hairs that contains formic acid, which is irritating to the skin if touched. This uncomfortable property dissipates when dried and crushed, and disappears when cooked.

Our best-selling bulk herb at Herban Wellness, nettle leaf is a very useful medicinal herb that grows abundantly here in the Pacific Northwest. The leaf is most commonly used, but the root and seed both have medicinal properties as well.

Read more about Nettle properties HERE

How to use it:
Drink as a tea, alone or in a blend - usually 1 Tbsp/cup hot water, steeped a minimum of 10-15 minutes and consumed 2-3 times/day.
As a powder, this herb makes a great nutritional addition to smoothies. A serving is generally 1 heaping tsp - 1 Tbsp.
As a tincture, take 2 dropperfuls 2-3 times/day or 3 dropperfuls twice/day.

Featured Product:
Neti Pot
Many of you may have already heard of or used this handy little pot for nasal rinsing.  Designed to help you cleanse out sinus irritants and pull mucus from deeper in your sinuses, this little pot works by creating suction/a vacuum of sorts in one nostril that pulls lukewarm sea salt water through and out the other nostril. Comfortable (although strange) when you find the right position, this is a tool many of you with chronic sinus congestion or allergies may find helpful.

Tips: Add 2-3 drops of our Sinus Support Drops for further direct effect, mix 1 drop of Sinus Clear essential oil to the salt then dissolve into the filtered water, or sprinkle in a pinch of goldenseal or Oregon grape powder, especially if you're prone to sinus infections.
Featured Essential Oil:
Sinus Clear

A sinus and respiratory-clearing blend of essential oils, the name pretty much speaks for itself.  These oils help open the sinuses and lungs, allowing them to drain and for you to breathe easier.

How do I use this?
Try adding a couple of drops to the floor of your shower in the morning (or on a washcloth) and inhaling in the steam; adding to a carrier oil base such as jojoba and dabbing a little bit around the nostrils or applying over the nasal sinuses around the nose and forehead; adding several drops to your diffuser and allowing the scent to be in your environment throughout the day or night; adding one drop to your neti pot along with the sea salt and rinsing your nasal passages.  You can also simply carry around the bottle with you and inhale as desired through the day.

Contains pure, therapeutic-grade, Organic essential oils of:
Rosemary, Eucalyptus, and Grand Fir.
