Massage Therapy Can Help During Cold & Flu Season

Schedule a massage when you are feeling healthy during the cold and flu season to boost your immune system.

Recent medical research shows that massage therapy can help boost your immune system strength by increasing the activity level of the body's natural "killer T cells", which fight off viruses.

Studies in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine examined the effects of Swedish massage therapy on the body's hormonal response and immune function. Researchers found that participants who received Swedish massage had a significant decrease in the hormone arginine-vasopressin, which plays a role in regulating blood pressure and water retention, and concluded that Swedish massage produces measurable biological effects and may have a positive effect on the immune system.

If you are just beginning to feel cold or flu symptoms, you should reschedule your massage appointment and consult your doctor, better yet- try acupuncture.

     Allergies According to Chinese Medicine

Seasonal allergies are known as "Bi Yuan" which means "nose pool" in Chinese medicine cause nasal congestion, discharge, and sneezing. The eyes are often affected and can become itchy and watery. According to allopathic medicine, allergies are due to an antibody-antigen reaction in the nasal mucosa.  In Chinese medicine allergies are due to repeated invasions of "Wind-Cold" which are not treated properly and can develop into further energetic imbalances.

Three effective treatments for allergies are:

1) Dietary- cutting out sugar, wheat, citrus fruits, and dairy; drinking enough water, and getting appropriate levels of vitamin A and vitamin C. Taking the tops of beets and making them into a tea can also be helpful.

2) Neti Pot- flushing out the irritants with a nasal wash. This can be done 3-4 times a day.

3) Chinese herbs- one of our favorites is Xanthium Nasal Formula which is a combination of herbs to treat seasonal allergies by constricting the vessels in the nasal mucosa, reducing nasal secretions, and desensitizing patients to allergens.

Did you know that 25% of all sinusitis is related to food allergies? If you suspect that food allergies could be involved, get tested.

Allergies and Acupuncture
Are itchy, watery eyes with a runny nose spoiling your outdoor fun? Is training for the marathon becoming more difficult because your allergy medicine is not adequately controlling your symptoms?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, allergies and sinusitis are viewed as one disease  with two different imbalances in the body. When allergies first occur, the allergens
(Wind cold or wind heat) cause sneezing, runny nose because of underlying constitutional deficiency. This low body energy is viewed as a weakened immune system and relates to the Wei Qi and the lung.
With the addition of itchy watery eyes, we find the liver function is weak because the eyes correspond to the liver.

Here at ilumina, we provide an acupuncture treatment plan designed specifically for your symptoms and constitutional needs. Along with acupuncture treatments, you will receive dietary recommendations and herbal and nutraceuticals. The initial focus is to treat the symptoms followed by strengthening the underlying deficiencies.
Neti Pot Nasal Wash
The Neti Pot This teapot-looking device is certainly not what it looks like.  It's a Neti Pot used for nasal washing, a practice that has been around more than 5,000 years as a means to ultimate health and better breathing.

What is it? The Neti Pot is a device used to clean out the nasal passageway to counteract pollution, allergies, colds and sinus problem.

Why does it work? The nose is the barrier between the atmosphere and our bodies. The mucus in our nose filters the air from dust, dirt and other particles.  Without cleaning the mucus out often, the particles can end up in the stomach. The Neti Pot cleans the mucus out of the nose allowing it to regenerate fresh mucus and keep the body healthy.

How does it work? You fill the Neti Pot with a saline mixture of pure non-iodized salt with two cups warm water. Then lean over a sink with your nose slightly higher than your lips and leaning toward one side. Breathe through your mouth, insert the spout of the pot in your upper nostril until it forms a comfortable seal. Raise the Neti Pot to allow the solution to flow through the upper nostril and out the lower nostril.  After you are done, be sure to exhale vigorously through both nostrils, simultaneously, to clear the nasal passages. Repeat with the other nostril.

Can I buy it at ilumina? Of course! It's $20.50 for the Neti Pot and $3.50 for a bag of Neti salt with over 160 scoops of salt.
