A Word From  Our
Executive Director
Our work is all about fostering conversations about the end of life and advance care planning, and this month we're pleased to share that the conversations are spreading throughout Santa Barbara County. Read about our volunteer Herm Trabbic who spoke to the community of Los Alamos recently! We were also moved by a TED Talk with Lucy Kalanithi, who shares the story of her late husband, Paul Kalanithi, a neurosurgeon who turned to writing after his terminal cancer diagnosis. We hope you'll take a moment to listen.

We have a full lineup of workshops this month. See the schedule below and consider joining us.

As always, thank you for your continued support and interest in what's new at the Alliance.

Advance Care Planning Presentation in Wine County
This month, Alliance volunteer Herm Trabbic (pictured) was the featured speaker at Casa Dumetz Wines' "Words To Live By" series. Herm traveled to Los Alamos to explain the importance of having conversations with loved ones about end-of-life issues. He introduced the Five Wishes Advance Care Directive (ACD) and how filling out an ACD can provide peace of mind, knowing that your wishes will be fulfilled when you can't speak for yourself. A winery may seem like an unusual place to start that discussion, but any opportunity to consider these important matters is a step forward in living and dying well!
TED Talk with Lucy Kalanithi: What Makes Life Worth Living in the Face of Death?
In this deeply moving talk, Lucy Kalanithi reflects on life and purpose, sharing the story of her late husband, Paul, a young neurosurgeon (and author of "When Breath Becomes Air") who turned to writing after his terminal cancer diagnosis. "Engaging in the full range of experience -- living and dying, love and loss -- is what we get to do," Kalanithi says. "Being human doesn't happen despite suffering -- it happens within it." We hope you'll enjoy this compelling presentation about living and dying well.
