A Word From Our
Executive Director
Dear Friends,
We are excited about the new emphasis on Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning being initiated by Sansum Clinic.  About ten years ago, the Alliance first partnered with Sansum to look for ways to bring Advance Care Planning (ACP) into their system. Eventually, the monthly workshop at Sansum's Pasetas Lane Clinic was the most well-attended of any of our ACP monthly workshops.
With the opening of the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, a few ACP workshops were provided at that venue.  Now, these workshops will be offered monthly, and  attendance is already high.
We're grateful for the opportunity to work with Samsum Clinic and appreciate their efforts to serve their patients and the public via Advance Care Planning.

With warm gratitude,
Susan Plummer, Exec. Director

 Sansum  Clinic:
Palliative Care and
Advance C are Planning Program

Sansum Clinic has launched an initiative to enhance quality of life for patients with serious illnesses.  The  Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning Program will help these patients  feel better and manage their physical and emotional well-being. Palliative care treats symptoms and side effects of disease and decease treatment  and identifies the emotional/spiritual needs of patients. This means giving patients autonomy and access to all the information they need about their illness.

Advance Care Planning will be  a major component of the Sansum initiative, as  patients are helped
to document their wishes  for the kind
of medical  care they wish to receive - or not receive.  Many in our community are using MyCare, an Advance Care Directive document developed here in Santa Barbara, to document their preferences.

Sansum plans to begin this program by the middle of 2019.
The Rise of the "Death Wellness" Movement
Death Wellness - isn't that a contradiction in terms?  Not really.  In fact, many people facing the end of their lives "refuse to have a terrible death."
