A Letter from our President

Aloha friends!

April Showers bring May Flowers; however, it's still raining dogs here at the rescue and we're hopping around like the Easter Bunny getting things done. Did you know that April is filled with dog prevention and awareness days? Some of the ones we "celebrate" every day are "National Heartworm Awareness", "Canine Fitness Month", "National Pet ID Week", and April 30th is "National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day".

In line with National Heartworm Awareness, we cannot stress enough how important it is to take your dog to the vet yearly for a health check, and obtain monthly meds and vaccinations. It's also important to have a vet relationship in case of emergencies. In the case of heartworm, it is preventable with monthly medication. It is treatable if contracted; however, the treatment is very painful for the dog and very expensive.

In line with National Pet ID Week, all of our dogs, as you are well-aware, are spayed or neutered, and microchipped. Did you know that in Hawaii, it is a Law (143-2.2) to microchip your dog and cat, and register the microchip number? If you need any of these services for your dog, please don't hesitate to contact us. We can help!

Now, get out there and exercise your dog or come and take one of ours out for a day for Canine Fitness Month!

SPOTLIGHT ON ADOPTABLE DOGS...

Petunia

  • Female 3 Years Old
  • 56 lbs
  • Pure Poi Gal
  • Tan & White
  • Adventurous

If April Showers bring May Flowers, why not a Petunia? Petunia is an independent woman! She's adventurous by day and a cuddler by night. She has been at the rescue over 100 days and would love a family of her own.

DID YOU KNOW???

It's Pet First Aid Awareness Month and here are a few important things to keep on hand in case of an emergency:

*Sterile gauze pads, non-stick bandages & adhesive tape for wound care

*Antiseptic wipes or solution to clean wounds

*Tweezers for removing splinters or foreign objects & Magnifier

*Scissors

*Rectal thermometer and lubricant

*Instant cold pack

*Styptic powder to stop bleeding from minor cuts or nail trimming incidents

*Neosporin

*Hydrogen peroxide (3%) to induce vomiting if instructed by a veterinarian

*Disposable gloves

*Emergency contact information - your vet's information and pet's medical history

*Portable water/food bowls

*Bottled water

*Blanket or towel

You can buy kits already assembled or make your own using a plastic container or a lunch bag

Roadie

  • Male
  • 6 Years Old
  • 60 lbs.
  • Black & White
  • Pure Poi Boy
  • Fetch anyone?

Roadie is medium-sized, beautiful, black boy with handsome markings. He's very good with other dogs, but would do best in an adult-only home. If you have a good swing arm, he'd love to play fetch with you! He's doing well in foster care, but has been patiently waiting over 200 days to find his fur-ever home.

FOSTERS and POTENTIAL FOSTERS

The Role of a Foster with Aloha Ilio Rescue...

We rely on our fosters because it's best for the dogs and also, we are able to intake more dogs than our facility can accommodate.

The Rescue's responsibility:

  • Pays for all medical bills, including spaying and neutering
  • Pays for monthly medications and vaccinations
  • Supplies puppy pads, puppy formula and puppy food to puppy fosters
  • Appointments to meet your foster are at our facility (not your home)
  • Going away? We will babysit the dog until your return

The Foster's responsibility:

  • Take the dog to vet appointments, adoption appointments and events
  • Train the dog with anything lacking in their skills - i.e., potty training, sit and leash walking
  • Provide dog food if you're able
  • Take lots of pictures!
  • Update the rescue on the dog's personality, skills and traits so we may enhance the dog's profile in our system and social media pages
  • We do ask for a three month commitment so that there's reasonable time for us to advertise the dog and show the dog to potential adopters

Contact us if you're interested in becoming a foster. We have a foster application on our website. We also have a foster FaceBook group called "AIR Fosters" to help support and share with our active fosters.
