Mountain Xpress Highlights Deacon Glenda McDowell

Our very own Deacon Glenda McDowell, who has served at the Cathedral of All Souls for decades, was featured in the Mountain Xpress newspapers' Golden Agers community spotlight. The Rev. Dn. Glenda McDowell was the first African-American woman ordained in the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina, and she grew up attending St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Asheville.

“All the church leaders were white males. I soon realized my calling as an African American woman was leadership: to stand up and have a voice for those that didn’t have a voice.”

Calling All Parish Admins and Lay Leaders - Rest and Relax Together at Lake Logan!

Tuesday–Thursday, October 1–3

Parish Administrators and Lay Ministers are crucial to the functioning of our churches and the health of our parish communities. They are communicators, confidantes, advisors, greeters, bookkeepers, event planners, space managers, schedule coordinators, caregivers, and so much more. That’s why Lake Logan hosts the Lay Ministers and Parish Administrators’ Retreat each year. We want to celebrate these champions of our diocese, engage in shared learning and professional development, and – perhaps most importantly – offer time and space for well-deserved relaxation, rejuvenation, and refreshment.

Discernment Day: God is Calling

Have you heard the rumbling of a call to ministry? Join us to explore how God might be calling you. Discernment Day is intended to help those who feel a call to service, through ordained or lay ministry start to explore their vocational call.

We will help answer questions such as: What am I getting myself into? I don’t feel ready, why do I feel called? What are the first steps? Do I have to move to attend seminary?

Speakers, table discussions, and Q & A time around topics such as Commission on Ministry, Iona School for Ministry, Ordained ministry (Priest & Deacon), and Lay ministry (Formation & Church Staff) will be offered.

We hope Discernment Day will help you find a path to your call.

Beyond Our Doors

Church Uncovers History While Uprooting Dead Tree

What began as the removal of a tree at Christ Church in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, has turned into a look into the life of the property’s former owner and the region’s 19th century history.

In the far northeastern corner of the state, Elizabeth City is part of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina.

The tree, a magnolia, had been planted over 100 years ago in memory of a son of the parish who had died during World War I. After it became diseased, the church decided to remove it and had planned to build a playground on that spot.

But when an excavation crew began digging the tree out, it brought up bricks, bits of broken dishes, bottles and other pottery – as well as a few bones. Fearing it might be an unmarked grave, the Rev. Daniel Cenci, the rector, asked the workers to stop digging and went to look for himself.

New Creation Care Curriculum Available

"Love God, Love God’s World" is a nine-session, film-based curriculum, ideal for Episcopalians anywhere on the journey with creation care and environmental ministry—from newcomers looking to take their first step to seasoned leaders seeking a transformative small-group experience.

Sessions have a similar structure to the popular Sacred Ground curriculum and include compelling films and readings, faith-based reflections, and discussion questions—each written by different contributors who draw from their own contexts and experiences. Participants will also discover ways to learn, pray, advocate, and conserve.
