Stories in the Diocese

Lenten Reflection

As the warmth of spring begins to blossom in Western North Carolina, potential is everywhere. Living things that lay dormant all winter long will soon burst forth with new life. Seeds that were planted, dropped, or scattered months ago have gone through the darkness and cold of germination and long to reach their leaves toward the sun. Life can be much like the cycle of the seasons, with things that pass away and new things that grow in their place. During Lent, we may find ourselves in the cycle of what feels like a spiritual winter. We may withdraw into the earth, planted with the hope that we will see the sun again but not being able to see its light. Without this period of dormancy and somber intention, without the death of the seed, new life could not thrive.

Resources for the Conflict in the Holy Land

The Office of Government Relations in The Episcopal Church has released a webpage of resources to follow the conflict in Gaza, Palestine, and Israel. The page includes ways to take action to support the citizens affected by the conflict, statements from leaders, partner resources, prayers, social media, and a list of press releases. The page is being updated as the situation develops.

Join the Good Friday Offering

Since 1922, the Good Friday Offering has provided a way to express support for the ministries of the three dioceses of the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East. These gifts continue to make a difference in the lives of many in the homeland of Jesus through supporting life-giving ministries, like the eye clinic in Ras Morbat and the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza.

Clergy Renewal of Vows

All clergy are invited to join Bishop José for the annual Clergy Renewal of Vows service on Thursday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville. In the midst of the busy season of Lent, this service is an opportunity to pause, slow down, and gather in fellowship, prayer, and mutual support, remembering the vows we took in ordained ministry. Please register if you plan to attend so we can plan for lunch.

Connection and Future in Focus at House of Bishops

Around 125 bishops gathered for The Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops annual spring retreat from Feb. 28 to March 4 at Camp Allen in Navasota, Texas. Themes that emerged in the discussion were needs for deepening friendships and fostering vulnerability within the house; studying Scripture together; greater transparency; and increased collaboration and information sharing on critical incidents within dioceses. While the spring gathering of the House of Bishops traditionally emphasizes retreat, Sabbath, and relationship building, the bishops held a business meeting on Feb. 29.
