Benefit Concert and Volunteer Weekend

On Saturday night, November 2nd, Lake Logan will host a benefit cookout and concert featuring WNC Americana band and fan-favorite ‘Fancy and the Gentleman’. Fancy and the Gentlemen brings an eclectic mix of honky-tonk, blues, southern gothic, rock, and classical roots to this Americana band.

Throughout the weekend, volunteer projects will be underway to clean-up damage caused by Helene. Volunteer projects will primarily focus on river bank clean-up and restoration. Indoor projects include care package assembly for community members most impacted by the storm.

Lake Logan welcomes all ages to join in the volunteer efforts and encourages everyone to register ahead of time to help in the planning, coordination, and meal preparations.

Come for just the cookout and concert, a day of volunteering, or join us for the whole weekend. Please register so a headcount can be collected.

Evensong: Lament and Hope after Helene

Music to be performed:

Prelude: Prelude on ALAIN, Op. 7, Maurice Duruflé

Introit: Evening Hymn, H. Balfour Gardiner

Psalm 149: Henry Smart

Canticles: King's College Service, Joanna Forbes L'Estrange

Preces and Responses: William Smith

Anthem: Justorum Animae (The Souls of the Just), William Byrd

Voluntary: Fugue on ALAIN, Op. 7, Maurice Duruflé

The service will be led by Trinity's Rector, the Rev. Dr. R. Scott White, the Trinity Chancel Choir, and Director of Music and Organist Dr. Kevin M. Seal.

Evensong is an ancient ritual with deep roots in the Anglican tradition. Based on the Roman Catholic Liturgy of Hours, it grew out of a combination of Vespers and Compline and was elevated to a status of great importance in the first edition of the Book of Common Prayer. It is centered around the singing of psalms and other canticles, especially the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis. It is a time for prayer and contemplation at the closing of the day. Our All Saints choral evensong this year will be a service of mourning and remembrance, but also of thanksgiving and hope, providing a space for grieving and peace, along with uplifting the soul.

Storytelling & Sermons

A clergy workshop using stories with sermons to experience more presence

How can clergy experience more presence during sermon delivery in the space where clergy and congregants meet? Presence, in this workshop, means being present to each other, aware of our interior self, and connected to the Source. In our half-day workshop, we will begin the morning with centering, followed by discussing the difference between a story and a sermon, working with sensory details, practicing short writings and delivering those writings in oral story form. Inspiration for our stories will come from different sources such as common experiences, biblical characters and Bible passages. Naomi will also share stories during our time together. Expect individual, group and partner work in a safe space. Leave ready to meaningfully incorporate stories with sermons.

Presenter:

Naomi Faw teaches at Appalachian State University, is an award-winning storyteller and published author. She writes about her experiences growing up in the southern region of the NC Appalachian Mountains. Megan Well’s, a nationally respected storyteller, says, “Listening to Naomi’s stories is like sitting on the front porch having a conversation.” Naomi has read for public radio stations in North Carolina and Virginia, given presentations and participated in storytelling events. She is a graduate of the Education for Ministry Program at the University of the South, an Associate of St. Mary’s Convent, and has been active at the local parish in various ways. She is passionate about stories and believes that by sharing stories we increase our empathy and our connectedness to each other.

Register for the free workshop by emailing The Rev. Karla Woggon, karla@ascensionhickory.org.
