AltWheels Fleet Day Features Latest Sustainable Solutions in

23rd Annual Event

NYC Chief Fleet Officer Keith Kerman headlines a day of expert panels, hands-on demonstrations and sustainable transportation awards;

next event set for October 4, 2027

The 23rd Annual AltWheels Fleet Day included fleet managers, the latest technologies, government officials, and clean transportation leaders on Monday, October 5, at the Four Points by Sheraton in Norwood, Massachusetts. Under the theme “Scaling What Works: Proven Strategies from Leading Fleets,” the event combined practical discussions with opportunities to explore vehicles, charging equipment and the latest technologies firsthand.

This year’s event featured 24 sponsors, 35 speakers, 31 indoor exhibitors 29 vehicles for display or ride and drive opportunities, over 35 fleets and 10 states represented plus Canada.

Keynote speaker Keith Kerman, Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services and NYC Chief Fleet Officer, delivered “Charging Ahead: NYC’s Clean Fleet Plan.” Drawing on the experience of managing the largest municipal fleet in the US and the largest electrical fleet with the US with more than 28,500 fleet units across 57 agencies and offices, Kerman shared how New York City is advancing fleet electrification, expanding charging infrastructure, replacing fossil diesel with biofuels and using data to improve operations. His presentation connected emissions reduction with fleet readiness, reliability and Vision Zero safety, offering lessons for organizations working to scale their own sustainable transportation programs.

Kerman’s presentation highlighted a broad approach to fleet transformation: electrifying vehicles where feasible, deploying hybrids and improving efficiency, and expanding renewable fuel use. He also addressed telematics, idling reduction, charging investments and the relationship between safer vehicles and more efficient operations. His participation extended beyond the keynote to the afternoon awards and networking cocktail hour, giving attendees additional opportunities to exchange ideas and insights.

“AltWheels brings together the people making cleaner transportation happen and the people looking for practical ways to get started,” said Alison Sander, founder of AltWheels. “This year’s conversations showed how much we can learn from one another—from fleets putting proven strategies into practice, to innovators expanding what is possible on our roads and waterways. Our goal is for attendees to leave with useful ideas, new connections and confidence to take their next step.” In her introduction, Alison pointed out that this year you can see in a number of countries that a mix of electrification, alternative fuels and higher diesel prices are bending the curve “with several countries reducing their oil consumption including China, Norway and Denmark among others.

The program featured four panels addressing the decisions and challenges facing today’s fleets:

Navigating the Energy Transition: What is Coming Down the Pike explored the evolving vehicle and technology choices available to fleet managers and the importance of matching solutions to operational needs.

Fleet Operations Leaders: Managing the Energy Transition focused on experience from public and university fleets, with discussion of moving beyond pilots and putting sustainable fleet strategies into broader use.

Future of Sustainable Marine expanded the conversation to waterways, examining opportunities for cleaner vessels and the technologies supporting marine transportation.

Importance of Energy Storage / Mobile Charging / Charging Infrastructure / Grid Sufficiency addressed the infrastructure and energy systems needed to support fleet deployment under the theme “Beyond the Vehicle: Building the Fleet Ecosystem.”

The Lunch With Experts program offered a more informal setting for attendees to discuss specific challenges directly with knowledgeable table hosts. Conversations covered topics including AI tools for fleet operations, fleet performance, sustainable marine transportation, Class 8 trucks, sustainability planning, charging infrastructure, Clean Cities resources, biodiesel, telematics among other topics.

Outside the meeting rooms, the Vehicle Showcase and Ride and Drive opportunities gave attendees a closer look at transportation solutions in action. The showcase included school buses, pickups, passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, a cargo cycle, utility equipment, marine technology and mobile charging systems. Participants could compare technologies, speak with company representatives and experience participating vehicles firsthand through available rides and test drives. Indoor exhibits offered additional opportunities to explore products and services and connect with solution providers.

The afternoon awards recognized leaders advancing sustainable transportation. Barry Carr of Clean Communities of Central New York received the Stephen R. Connors Visionary Award, honoring leadership that creates positive environmental change. Additional honorees were:

  • Vincent Micozzi, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Office of Vehicle Management — AltWheels Pioneer in Electrification.
  • Drew Rollert, Wada Hoppah — AltWheels Pioneer in Marine Commercialization.
  • Ron Gitelman, Yale University — AltWheels Pioneer in University Green Fleet.
