About the workshop

Friday Evening Reception will include refreshments. Participants are welcome to bring a guest to the reception. The presenting artists will share information and answer questions about the processes. Pottery will be available for purchase.

Saturday and Sunday will be hands on instruction of preparing the surface of your pottery for each process, along with firing throughout both days. It is fun and exciting to see your pieces come out of each firing and sharing the results.
Only registered students will be permitted on Saturday and Sunday.

Alternative Firing and Raku Processes will be:
  • Aluminum Foil Saggar
  • Naked Raku-2 Step Process
  • Vinyl Resist Raku Glaze
  • Straw Firing
  • Horse Hair
Lunches are included on Saturday and Sunday

The workshop will include handouts with instructions and recipes to take home.

What to Wear for Firing: Participants will need to wear solid toe shoes, long sleeves that are not loose, and long pants on Saturday and Sunday. Aprons would be great to bring and be sure to dress for the mess.

Important: Bring a can of Deft or Minwax Spray Wood Finish in Satin or Gloss to seal your pieces. Deft is available at Ace Hardware.

Preparing your Pots:  Each participant will bring (6) pots that are up to 9" tall x 6" wide that have been bisque fired. We recommend using a clay body that will work with the alternative firing processes.
  • Raku Clay, Danish White or Soldate 60 will work with all 5 processes
  • Laguna B-Mix is often used for the Saggar and Horse Hair
  • Laguna #55 is off-white in color and works well for the Saggar firing
  • The clays are available at Mud Puddle Pottery

We suggest applying Terra Sigillata on your pieces before bisque firing, and bisque at cone 010 (1650 degrees) to cone 06 (1850 degrees). You can leave the Terra Sigillata off of the pieces that you choose to do the Vinyl Resist Raku Glaze on.

Participants can bring their pieces in to Mud Puddle Pottery and apply the Terra Sigillata there, including bisque firing your pieces (call to schedule coming in).

If you want to bisque fire your pieces at Mud Puddle Pottery, then please bring them in "dry and ready to fire" by the weekend before the workshop.
Call and let us know that you are bringing pottery to include in bisque firing so that we can allow kiln space for you. 615-646-6644
