A NOTE FROM

OUR PRESIDENT

Hello fellow Altrusans!

I hope this letter finds you well today. In this newsletter you will find some important

information regarding our club’s activities as well as information on the district conference in April. Beth Hickman does a wonderful job with our newsletter each month, so please take the time to read through what she has gathered for us.

Let’s give a warm welcome to Valarie Emery and Heather Banks who officially became

Altrusans in January!

While we certainly want to increase membership, keeping the members we have is

extremely important. If there is an Altrusan that has not made a meeting or project, recently, please give them a call and check on them! If you are a sponsor of an ALTRUSAN who recently joined (within the past 18 months), please remember to check in and invite them to participate in activities.

Thank you for making a positive impact on our community and beyond!

Yours in Altrusa Service,

Kesha Waters

The Days for Girls Team is Changing Girls' Lives!

Freedom from Period Poverty

The Altrusa Days for Girls Team Oak Ridge is now in our fourth year of making reusable feminine hygiene kits! Again, we set a goal of completing components for 25 kits. That may not seem like very much but, as members of the team will tell you… “ That’s a lot of measuring, cutting, pressing, sewing, & serging.” In other words, a total of 200 liners, 50 shields, 25 carry bags, and 25 kit bags have to be fabricated. And, it all has to meet the DfG Gold Standard. Why? So that the kits do what they promise-provide freedom from “period poverty” and last for up to 3 years.

What if not having sanitary supplies meant days without school, days without income, days without leaving the house… Every girl in the world deserves education, safety, and dignity. The Days for Girls (DfG) kits that we make help women and girls protect their health, break the period poverty cycle and minimize environmental pollution and waste. I’d like to note that the movement to end period poverty here at home has begun. More on that at another time.

Our Team has been working hard! As a result, we are well on our way to meeting our goal .

We have worked independently and at workshops and we will be continuing workshops this spring. Thanks to The Family Justice Center, The YWCA Oak Ridge, and the First Freewill Baptist Church for letting us use theirspace. Thanks to all of our Altrusa members who have spent so many hours helping to make this happen!

If you would like to be a part of the team (especially if you sew) contact team leader Betsy Peterson for more information (865-207-7295) or by email at betsy.peterson11@gmail.com.
