The weather is turning cold, and students are bringing sweaters and jackets to keep them warm. We encourage you to write your child's name in their coat, so we can return it to them. All lost and found items, are hanging in the hallway. Please check for your child's missing items!

Volunteers are needed for our annual Harvest Festival!
This is the PTA's most successful fundraiser each year, but it requires many generous community members, parents, and teachers to put on this fun event.
Most importantly, we hope to see you and your family at Alturas on October 26th from 5:30-8:30 to enjoy food and games!

Este evento es el más exitoso para recaudar fondos para la escuela pero se requiere de muchos miembros de la comunidad, padres y maestros generosos para organizar este evento divertido.
¡Lo más importante es que los esperamos en el evento el día viernes 26 de octubre de 5:30pm-8:00pm para disfrutar de comida y juegos!

The BCSD has a new policy in place which requires all volunteers for any event to be background checked. If you would like to volunteer to participate in your child's classroom or at a school event (such as Ski Week), you will need to visit the District Office and be fingerprinted.
El BCSD tiene una nueva política vigente que requiere que todos los voluntarios para cualquier evento verifiquen sus antecedentes. Si desea ser voluntario y participar en el aula de su hijo(a) o en un evento de la escuela (como el Festival del otoño o Semana de esquiar), tendrá que visitar la Oficina del Distrito y tomar las huellas digitales.

Halloween and Día de los muertos

Alturas celebrará el día de Halloween con un desfile de disfraces
el miércoles 31 de octubre a las 12:30 pm en el gimnasio.
Su hijo puede elegir disfrazarse para este evento. Recuerde que los disfraces deben ser apropiados y no se permiten armas de ningún tipo. Los niños pueden traer un cambio de ropa si se prefieren cambiar después del desfile. Si su hijo no celebra Halloween y usted no quiere que participe, por favor informe a su maestro con tiempo. Gracias.
El Día de los Muertos es un día festivo que se celebra en los países de América Latina y es especialmente popular en México. En esta fiesta especial celebrada los días 1 y 2 de noviembre de cada año, se honran las vidas de las personas que han muerto. Se cree que las almas de los muertos vuelven a visitar a sus seres queridos en este momento. Contrario a la creencia popular, el Día de los Muertos no es un momento triste o deprimente, sino un tiempo de felicidad y celebración de la vida.

Alturas will celebrate Halloween with a costume parade on Wednesday, October 31st at 12:30 in the gym. Your child may choose to dress-up for this event. Please remember that costumes should be appropriate and no weapons of any kind are allowed. Children may bring a change of clothes if they prefer to change after the parade. If your child does not celebrate Halloween and you do not want them to participate, please let his/her teacher know ahead of time. Thank you!
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated in Latin American countries and is especially popular in Mexico. This special holiday, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd each year, honors the lives of people who have died. It is believed that the souls of the dead come back to visit their loved ones at this time. Contrary to popular belief, Día de los Muertos is not a sad or depressing time, but a time of happiness and celebration of life!

Ha sido un gran inicio de año. Cómo distrito hemos establecido grandes expectativas para nuestros estudiantes y para nosotros en las áreas de alfabetización temprana y lenguaje académico. Sabemos que para que los niños tengan éxito deben estar involucrados en actividades importantes durante su día escolar. Nos hemos enfocado en el lenguaje académico y oral en Alturas desde nuestra creación como una escuela magnet. También estamos trabajando con unos consejeros de add.a.lingua. Ellos son especialistas en educación de doble inmersión. Ellos ayuda a prepara los estudiantes para una vida mundial para apoyar las metas del distrito escolar.
Este año estamos participando en conversaciones continuas y desarrollo profesional para traer un enfoque altamente enfocado y con rigor en nuestro plan de estudios, lograr nuestros estándares de nivel de grado, y traer claridad al "POR QUÉ" para nuestros estudiantes y maestros. "¿Por qué, y entonces ¿Cómo enseño los conceptos que enseño de manera significativa y atractiva?" "¿Por qué es importante para mí aprender y participar en una comunidad colaborativa en las actividades que mis maestros planean para mí?" Y "¿cómo se relacionan las habilidades, los conceptos y los estándares curriculares con mi mundo y conmigo?" Comenzamos primero con el yo y nos movemos a entender lo que aprendemos, sabemos y hacemos, y cómo se relaciona con el mundo, nuestro lugar y nuestro rol en él, y el impacto potencial que tendremos en él.
Como padres les pedimos que reserven un tiempo todos los días para hablar sobre la escuela. Le pedimos que se entusiasme con lo que sus hijos están aprendiendo. Haz que hablen sobre la escuela y el trabajo que llevan a casa, y pídeles que te expliquen el "Por qué". Anímelos a participar en el duro trabajo que hacen todos los días, para dominar las habilidades académicas y sociales que les permitirán tener éxito hoy y todos los próximos días. Cuando ellos dicen que es difícil, premie su trabajo y ayúdales a comprender, si es muy difícil. Eso es emocionante porque significa que están aprendiendo. Juntos haremos diferencia, el uno para el otro, y nuestra mayor comunidad de aprendizaje.

It has been a great start to the year. As a district we have set high expectations for ourselves and our students in the areas of early literacy and academic language. We know in order for kids to be successful they must be engaged in meaningful activities throughout their school day. We have focused on academic and oral language at Alturas since our inception as a magnet school. This year we have entered a partnership with add.a.lingua, who helps schools prepare students for an increasingly global landscape through implementation and support of quality dual immersion programs. They are helping our teachers gain better understanding in the areas of bi-literacy, and research based instructional practices which complement the focus areas of the BCSD.
We are continuing to engage in ongoing conversations and professional development to bring a highly focused approach and rigor to our curriculum, achieving our grade level standards, and bring clarity to the "WHY" for both our students and teachers. "Why, and then how, do I teach the concepts I teach in meaningful and engaging ways?" "Why is it important for me to learn and be engage in a collaborative community in the activities my teachers plan for me?" And "how do the skills, concepts, and curricular standards relate to me and my world?" We start first with the I, and move to the us in our understanding of what we learn, know and do and how it relates to the world, our place and role in it, and the potential impact we will have on it.
As parents we ask you set aside time every day to talk about school. We ask that you be excited about what your kids are learning. Make them talk about school, and the work they bring home, and ask them to explain to you the "Why". Encourage them to be engaged in the hard work they do everyday, to master the academic and social skills that will enable them to be successful today, and all tomorrows to come. When they say it is hard, honor their work and help them understand, if it's hard, that is exciting, because it means they are learning. Together we make a difference, for each other, and our greater learning community.

How to Empower Your Language Learner

All parents can be helpful in their children's literacy development, regardless of their language, education, or literacy level. Parents who speak little or no English or Spanish can contribute to their children's education in valuable ways.
All
language learners benefit when they develop solid literacy skills in their first language. Through Spanish, they are developing key language and literacy skills that may enable them to become excellent readers in English and vice versa. Research tells us that strong literacy skills in one language can transfer to a new language.
There are important differences between English and Spanish. Your awareness of these differences will help you to better empower your language learner:
Spanish-speaking learners may have difficulty distinguishing one English sound from another when they listen, speak, read, or write especially the sounds that don't exist in Spanish. They may have trouble learning the 15 English vowel sounds because Spanish only has five. Beginning English language learners may not hear the difference between
cat
and
cut
,
call
and
cold
, or
tin
and
ten
. They need to hear the vowel distinctions from you before they are able to produce them on their own.

Todos los padres pueden ser de mucha ayuda en el desarrollo de la educación de sus hijos, independientemente de su idioma, educación o nivel de alfabetización. Los padres que hablan poco o nada de inglés o español pueden contribuir con la educación de sus hijos de manera valiosa. Todos los estudiantes de idiomas se benefician cuando desarrollan sólidas habilidades de alfabetización en su primer idioma. A través del español, están desarrollando habilidades claves del lenguaje y alfabetización que les permitirán convertirse en excelentes lectores en inglés y viceversa. Investigaciones nos dicen que las fuertes habilidades de alfabetización en un idioma se pueden transferir a otro nuevo idioma.
Hay diferencias importantes entre el inglés y el español. Su conocimiento de estas diferencias le ayudarán al mejor fortalecimiento de su estudiante. Los estudiantes de habla hispana pueden tener dificultad para distinguir un sonido en inglés de otro cuando escuchan, hablan, leen o escriben, especialmente los sonidos que no existen en español. Pueden tener problemas para aprender los 15 sonidos de vocales en inglés porque el español solo tiene cinco. Los estudiantes principiantes del idioma inglés pueden no escuchar la diferencia entre gato y corte, llamada y frío, o estaño y diez. Ellos necesitan escuchar primero los distintos sonidos de las vocales de usted antes de que sean capaces de producirlas por su cuenta.
