October News and Updates from the Office of Alumnae Relations

Letter from the President

Dear Alumna,

As we transition into the month of November, I reflect on the various school events held at Catholic High in October. We began by celebrating the Feast Day of our patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi, with a beautiful Liturgy presided by Fr. Jim Kiesel of St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Catholic High was pleased to host several other events this month such as the 39th annual Math Olympiad, Eastern Shore Alumnae Luncheon, and Open House for prospective families!

Please take the time to read the wonderful stories in this edition of the October Alumnae Monthly Update. We hope you will spread the good news of Catholic High, especially as we approach the heart of our recruiting season. We also look forward to welcoming you to our Under the Big Top Gala on Friday, November 14 from 6:00 - 10:30 p.m. at the Boumi Shrine Center.

Lux Tua Luceat,

Barbara D. Nazelrod, Ph.D. '68

President

Alumnae News and Events

Alumna Selected for Women in Bio Panel

Courtney Cavin '18, Founding Engineer & Chief Operating Officer at Astek Diagnostics - Fighting Antibiotic Resistance, was one of four inspiring professionals selected to speak on the Women in Bio virtual webinar panel. The panel aims to share how resilience and reputation shape leadership in the life sciences industry. Way to let your light shine, Courtney!

Finding a Love for Volunteering

During her Sophomore year at Catholic High, Samantha Minnerly '24 stumbled upon Habitat for Humanity as part of her service hour requirement. Later that summer, she volunteered over 80 hours at Habitat for Humanity ReStore and her passion for volunteering was ignited.

Today, she currently works as an Associate for the Chesapeake Region in Glen Burnie and has been doing so for over a year. Samantha's role includes processing donations, pricing items, and even picking up donations from homes in Anne Arundel County. We are so proud of Samantha for living out Catholic High's mission of Christian community service!

Cubs in Ocean City

We were delighted to host our annual Eastern Shore Luncheon at Seacrets, Ocean City on Thursday, October 9. It was so enjoyable catching up with this group of alumnae!

The Alumnae Giving Project

Are you interested in assisting the Alumnae Christmas/Giving Project? During the month of October, we donated to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry and another soup kitchen and clothes closet.

We are currently touching base with former contributors and shoppers to help with our outreach in December! We are donating clothes, shoes, jackets and toys for needy children at a Title One school and a shelter. The Project will also donate items requested by low income senior citizens at a Catholic Charities subsidized residence community. Please contact me if you would like to be a part of this wonderful initiative!

Fondly,

Catholic High Partners with Mount St. Mary's

Catholic High was thrilled to welcome President of Mount St. Mary's University, Dr. Gerard Joyce, and our appointed Admissions Representative, Mr. Joshua Karlheim, to campus earlier this month to interview eight of our Seniors as part of our brand-new partnership with the university!

This amazing partnership provides wonderful opportunities for our young women as they begin their college search including merit-based scholarships, application fee waivers, instant admissions decisions, and special Catholic High scholarships! Congratulations, Ladies, on your acceptance to The Mount!

25th Annual President's Reception

On Thursday, October 23, we celebrated Catholic High's 25th President's Reception! We welcomed generous donors and recognized those who were named members of the prestigious President's Circle.

Catholic High was also proud to present President, Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod '68 with the Distinguished Longstanding Alumna Award for her 25 years of dedicated service, contributions, and commitment to Catholic High. Dr. Nazelrod accepted her award alongside her family and Sister Patricia McCarron, S.S.N.D., Ph.D. Superintendent of the Archdiocese of Baltimore Catholic Schools!

Happy Halloween!

Our Cubs in Chemistry are ready for Halloween!

Students carved pumpkins and performed a Flame Test Lab on various salt ions illustrating color spectrum wavelength, frequency, and energy, as a result of electron ejection! The Chemistry Lab is looking extra spooky with these carved pumpkins!
