Dear Fellow Alumni,
As the spring semester gets underway, I’m always struck by the breadth and energy of the CCNY community—locally, nationally, and around the world. This issue of Alumni Beat reflects that spirit, from alumni and faculty achievements to upcoming programs, gatherings, and opportunities to stay connected.
February also marks Black History Month (BHM), a time to honor the extraordinary contributions of Black alumni, students, faculty, and leaders who have shaped—and continue to shape—The City College of New York. Their impact is woven into the fabric of our institution and our Association. Several BHM events are listed below.
You’ll also find our Call for Nominations for the 2026 Alumni and Service Awards, including the Townsend Harris Medal, Finley Award, and Alumni, Faculty, and Staff Service Awards. These honors rely on nominations from our community, and I encourage you to take a moment to recognize someone whose impact deserves celebration. The deadline for 2026 consideration is Friday, March 6.
Whether you’re joining us at an upcoming event, reconnecting through an affiliate group, mentoring students, or renewing your membership, thank you for being part of this remarkable network. Your engagement strengthens CCNY’s legacy—and helps shape its future.
Warm regards,

David Covington

Louis Levine-Gabriella de Beer Lecture in Genetics
"Getting to the Heart of the Matter: Curing Genetic Cardiomyopathy" by Dr. C. Seidman
Wednesday, March 18 | 5-7pm ET
CCNY Campus, Great Hall of Shepard Hall
FREE
The ultimate opportunity presented by discovering the genetic basis of human disease is accurate prediction and disease prevention. To enable this achievement, genetic insights must enable the identification of at-risk individuals prior to end-stage disease and strategies that delay or prevent clinical expression. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) provides a paradigm for fulfilling these opportunities. HCM is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death on the athletic field that causes symptoms, arrhythmias, and heart failure. HCM alters cardiac morphology (increase ventricular wall thickness) and function (hyperdynamic contraction and poor relaxation) that propel adverse outcomes in affected patients. With the discovery of human gene mutations that cause HCM, disease models were developed that enabled mechanistic studies to explain and address disease pathophysiology. These insights propelled targeted drug development to normalize cardiac morphology and reduce symptoms. With the emergence of genetic strategies to specifically modify mutations, new opportunities exist with the real potential to cure HCM. Many challenges remain, but the active and vital efforts of researchers, physicians, and patients, genetic cures in HCM are poised for success.
Dr. Christine Seidman is the Thomas W. Smith Professor of Medicine and Genetics at Harvard Medical School, an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. At Princeton, Dr. Bassler teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses. Dr. Bassler directed the Molecular Biology Graduate Program from 2002-2008 and she currently chairs Princeton University’s Council on Science and Technology which has revamped the science curriculum for humanists. Bassler is a passionate advocate for diversity in the sciences and she is actively involved in and committed to educating lay people in science.

Jos Duncan-Asé '11MFA recently received a prestigious fellowship for filmmaking--the Pew fellowship in the Arts.
Supporting artists since 1992, the Pew Fellowships in the Arts program nurtures local artistic talent through 12 annual unrestricted grants. This year’s fellowships total $1 million to support a dozen Philadelphia-area artists, each receiving $85,000 in unrestricted funds. Beyond the monetary award, a fellowship includes professional advancement resources such as financial counseling, workshops, and opportunities to participate in artist residency programs.
Through documentary filmmaking centered on Black, Brown, and Indigenous people, Duncan Asé uses storytelling to amplify community voices and themes of remembrance, reflection, and affirmation. Her films chronicle narratives ranging from intimate conversations in hair salons, to a mother striving to save her son from gang violence, to the legacy of a Black female opera company founder during the Jim Crow era.
