2018 Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Boot Camp
August 9 – 11, 2018 - RSVP to VIP Reception and Free Training
In Collaboration with the Shepard Broad College of Law, H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, and the College of Engineering and Computing, the Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic will offer the first annual Entrepreneur Boot Camp. The program is designed to immerse entrepreneurs in the skills and disciplines needed to successfully launch a start-up business, with particular focus on those companies built on research, design, or innovation.
 
Over 400 alumni, NSU students, faculty and staff have preregistered for the Entrepreneur Boot Camp to be held on the Davie Campus of NSU.
 
Registration is open. Participants may attend for free or support the event with a VIP ticket that includes the VIP reception ($50). This training will also be streamed live to those that register.

How to Build a Fictional World: Legal and Business Aspects of Pop Culture and Creative Industries

A vibrant group of attorneys and friends attended the Florida Supercon’s first panel program exclusively for lawyers. The presentations focused on a wide range of legal issues involved in creating, licensing, and managing the creative works involved in comic books, video games, films, and merchandise.

2018 International Faculty Training Conference: Engaging, Advising & Assessing the Next Generation of Law Students
July 24 – 27, 2018
Over 150 legal educators from across the globe attend online and in person for the Third Annual International Faculty Training Conference. This year’s program focused on how educators can better understand their student body to effectively educate this generation of students and anticipate the one that follows. Legal educators from around the world came together to expand their knowledge of teaching law students, as well as to share their experiences.
 
Links to video recordings of each speaker, PowerPoint presentations will be posted on the conference web page by August 15, 2018.
On Campus Interview (OCI) Fall 2018
Session 1 August 27 - September 14, 2018
NSU Law employers are invited to participate in our Fall 2018 On-Campus Interview Program (OCI) Session 1, held August 27 - September 14, 2018. The program is 100% preselect and allows employers to interview only the students they select after reviewing application materials.

Career Services welcomes employers to place job postings in the NSU Law employment database, Symplicity , where students and alumni review positions and have access to helpful career resources. This is a great resource both for employers and for alumni seeking to explore their career opportunities.

Trial Advocacy Summer Institute – Volunteers needed
Saturday, August 11, 2018 | 2:00 - 6:30 p.m.
The NSU Trial Association will host its fourth annual Trial Advocacy Summer Institute (TASI) August 7 - 11, 2018 at NSU Law. TASI is a five-day course taught by NSU Law faculty and members of our litigation community. Students practice oral advocacy, trial skills, opening statements and closing arguments, direct and cross examination, and evidence law in a trial setting. Immigration Legal Screening Clinic
Saturday, September 29 | 10:00 - 4:00 p.m.
NSU Law, Americans for Immigrant Justice, Catholic Legal Services, and Hispanic Unity of Florida are partnering to provide free legal screenings to the community. 

With the help of partnering organizations, this pro bono immigration clinic will offer participants the chance to learn more about how immigration law affects them and their families with Know Your Rights presentations.

Continuing the NSU Law Connect Plus Seminar Series
Fall 2018
The practice of law is a lifetime commitment to learning which requires ongoing training to improve legal skills and knowledge. Our commitment to our alumni includes providing training and resources to support them beyond the classroom. 
 
Law Connect Plus, formerly Law Center Plus, continues to provide ongoing skills training and other resources for our alumni, especially our newest members. A series of ten seminars each year will include practice skills that will build confidence among new attorneys and educate all our alumni seeking to improve their knowledge and techniques in a variety of areas. These seminars continue to be free to alumni in their first two years after graduation. All other alumni and friends may attend for a registration fee. All attendees will receive a continental breakfast and CLE credits. Join us so you can build the successful career you envisioned when you first came to NSU Law. A listing of the upcoming CLE events will be in next month’s newsletter.
Nova Law Review Symposium
Progression 2018: Using Law to Facilitate an Efficacious Innovative Economy
Friday, October 5, 2018 | 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Join us for the annual Nova Law Review academic symposium, offering 6.0 CLE credits and presentations from leading lawyers and faculty across the nation. This year’s symposium issue’s theme is: Progression 2018: Using Law to Facilitate an Efficacious Innovation Economy. The panels will address the intersection of law and business, focusing on new technologies, ethics, and regulation.
 
The Symposium presents an opportunity for academics, practitioners, and students in a variety of legal, business, and technology fields to exchange ideas and explore emerging issues.

Regina Franco Murphey is now a partner at the Fort Lauderdale office of Kelley Kronenberg Murphey focuses her practice on all aspects of liability and casualty defense representing a diverse range of clients in general liability matters including wrongful death, transportation liability, premises liability, automobile negligence, construction defect litigation, admiralty and insurance defense.

Jaime Abigail Quick has joined Faegre Baker Daniels as counsel in the firm’s Minneapolis office. Quick’s practice is focused in all areas of marital and family law, both at the trial and appellate levels. She also advises clients in the area of asset protection, commercial and probate litigation, as well as estate and guardianship administration. She is admitted to practice law in both Florida and Minnesota.

Matthew Thibaut   has co-opened   Haselkorn & Thibaut, P.A., Investment Loss Recovery Group, helping investors recover losses due to stockbroker and financial adviser negligence or misconduct.

Jason B. Blank   of Haber Blank in Ft. Lauderdale presented, “Direct Examination: The Art of What Happened Next?” at the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers annual meeting.

Lindsay Demmery , has been nominated to the 2018-2019 Board of Directors of the Palm Beach County Bar Association. Demmery is with Prestige Law & Land, PLLC in West Palm Beach.

Jennifer Diaz   of Diaz Trade Law in North Miami spoke on changes to “Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act” at the National Customs Brokers Global Trade Educational Conference in Dallas. She also is hosting an eight-part webinar series for compliance professionals.

Katie Drozd has joined Keller Landsberg PA as an associate attorney focusing her practice in the areas of property insurance defense, general insurance coverage and liability, and legal malpractice defense.

Michelle K. Suarez, has been selected as a 2018 Super Lawyers Rising Star (also selected in 2016 and 2017). Suarez is partner and chief operating officer of Florida Entrepreneur Law, P.A.   She has also been elected to serve as the Second Vice Chair to the Inclusion Mentorship and Fellowship Committee of the Business Law Section of the Florida Bar. Suarez specializes in business and commercial litigation, is actively involved in her community, and also speaks on topics regarding business startups and health and wellness.

Ricki Frand has joined Keller Landsberg PA as an associate attorney focusing in the areas of property insurance defense, general insurance coverage and liability and commercial litigation.   
 
Jordan Greenberg , has joined Kelley Kronenberg ’s Fort Lauderdale office as an Attorney. Greenberg assists in handling matters related to all aspects of liability and casualty defense, with a focus on Third-Party Insurance Defense.

Kyle S. Roberts, of the Fort Lauderdale office of Kelley Kronenberg, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of The Florida Bar Journal and News for a three year term. His appointment was made by Michelle Suskauer, the President of The Florida Bar.

2016
Ryan Adams , has joined Kelley Kronenberg ’s Fort Lauderdale office as an Attorney Adams assists in handling matters related to Workers’ Compensation defense.

2017
Joscelyn Sanchez , has joined Kelley Kronenberg s Miami office as an Attorney Sanchez assists in handling matters related to insurance defense litigation, Property and Casualty Claims, and Complex Commercial and Construction Disputes.

In Memorium
Catherine Catri passed away on June 23, 2018. Catherine was the mother of Wesley E. Catri (JD 2005) and wife of Wesley L. Catri. Both father and son are with Catri, Holton, Kessler & Kessler P.A. and long-time friends of NSU Law. The firm generous gifts have sponsored a lecture room at NSU Law. | Obituary

Steven Sharples (JD 2006) lost his long and hard-fought battle against brain cancer. He was laid to rest on June 18, 2018. Steve is survived by his wife, Kelly, and his two beautiful daughters, Violet and Summer. Donations may be made in Steve's name to raicestexas.org , https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/leafund , or www.aclu.org

On Campus Interview (OCI) Fall 2018

NSU Law students are invited to participate in our Fall 2018 On-Campus Interview Program (OCI) Session 1, held from August 27 – September 14, 2018. OCI allows students to apply to government, public interest and law firm employers for summer associate, law clerk and permanent employment.

Employers may also choose to participate in our Resume Collection Program. This program allows employers to receive resumes and application materials from students. The employers then have the opportunity to contact interested students directly to schedule interviews.
 
Bidding for the program began in Symplicity on July 12. To prepare, students should review the employer list and schedule an appointment with a career advisor to have their resume reviewed and to discuss their bid list.
