NSU Law Children and Family Clinic successfully reunites father and daughter
Six 2018 3L students, under the direction of Professor Brion Blackwelder and Professor Timothy Arcaro, successfully represented a father seeking the return of his ten-year-old daughter in an international child abduction case in Broward County, Florida.
NSU Law alumna, The Honorable Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan nominated
NSU Law alumna Ariana Fajardo Orshan (JD 1996) has been nominated by President Donald Trump to be the U.S. Attorney in South Florida. Upon confirmation by the Senate, she will be the first woman to run the Southern District of Florida’s U.S. Attorney’s Office.

NSU College of Law hosts Alumni Reception at Annual Florida Bar Convention
Thursday, June 14, 2018
NSU College of Law hosted an alumni cocktail reception during the 2018 Annual Florida Bar Convention at the Hilton Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida. Dean Debra Moss Vollweiler welcomed guests and updated alumni on current events at NSU Law. President-elect John M. Stewart and NSU Law 2018 commencement speaker John Berry spoke and visited with alumni.

Congratulations to Valerie Barnhart for receiving The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Kathy Bishop most distinguished board member award.

Amanda Decker received a special thank you from The Florida Bar Law Young Lawyers Division Student Division for her service as a member and the 2017-2018 President.
NSU Law students receive The Florida Bar Foundation Summer Fellows Grants
Two NSU Law students were among those selected by the Florida Bar Foundation to receive Summer Fellows Grants to provide critical social service assistance.

Junie Cazeau is working with the Community and Economic Development initiative to help immigrant victims of violence. Daniela Sirimarco is working with the Family Defense Program, which helps immigrant clients through community education, legal screening clinics and representation. 

The Foundation was able to restart the Summer Fellows Program after a seven-year hiatus, thanks to donations and pledges. Fellows attended a three-day interactive boot camp which included skills such as persuasive speaking and client interviewing techniques.

Entrepreneurial Boot Camp

In Collaboration with the Shepard Broad College of Law, H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, and the College of Engineering and Computing, the Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic will offer the first annual Entrepreneurial Boot Camp. The program is designed to immerse entrepreneurs in the skills and disciplines needed to successfully launch a start-up business, with particular focus on those companies built on research, design or innovation.

NSU Law students and employers are invited to participate in our Fall 2018 On-Campus Interview Program (OCI), held August 27 - November 9, 2018. The program is 100% preselect and allows employers to interview only the students they select after reviewing application materials.

Career Services welcomes employers to place job postings in the NSU Law employment database, Symplicity, where students and alumni review positions and have access to helpful career resources. This is a great resource both for employers and for alumni seeking to explore their career opportunities.

Trial Advocacy Summer Institute – Judges needed
Saturday, August 11, 2018 | 2:00 - 6:30 p.m.
The NSU Trial Association will host its fourth annual Trial Advocacy Summer Institute (TASI) August 7 - 11, 2018 at NSU Law. TASI is a five-day course taught by NSU Law faculty and members of our litigation community. Students practice oral advocacy, trial skills, opening statements and closing arguments, direct and cross examination, and evidence law in a trial setting. NSU Law alumni can serve as volunteer judges and instructors. Please RSVP or contact Megan Chaney at mchaney@nova.edu.

Zelica Quigley , has been selected as a member of The Florida Bar Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Florida Bar. Quigley is of counsel at Broad and Cassel with her practice focusing on residential and commercial real estate transactions.

Matthew Konecky of the Law Office of Matthew Konecky, P.A . in Palm Beach Gardens, presented a panel discussion to Keiser University’s criminal justice students about DUI cases with a former Palm Beach Sheriff Office DUI investigator.

Jason L. Steinman has joined Assouline & Berlowe P.A. in Fort Lauderdale. Jason handles trusts and estates, probate and guardianship matters, in addition to probate and business litigation.

Thomas Mullin with Nason Yeager Gerson White & Lioce, P.A. in Palm Beach County was elected to the board of directors of the Florida Association of Environmental Professionals.

David J. DePiano has been named a partner with Shapiro, Blasi, Wasserman & Hermann in Boca Raton. DePiano is experienced in both litigation and real estate transactional work.

2010
Valerie Barnhart, has been selected as a Super Lawyers Rising Star. Barnhart, partner in the Davie-based firm of Perera Barnhart , is also chair of the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Technology Committee and hosts the Technology Roadshows across the state. Barnhart received the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Kathy Bishop Most Distinguished Board Member Award. Barnhart’s practice focuses on business litigation, technology transactions, and business/corporate.

Jorge Freddy Perera , has been selected as a Super Lawyers Rising Star. Perera, partner in the Davie-based firm of Perera Barnhart , focuses his practice on employment and labor law.

Jason M. Vanslette , partner with Kelley Kronenberg , has been rated AV Preeminent® by Martindale-Hubbell®. Vanslette works in the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office and focuses his practice on Mortgage Foreclosure Litigation and assisting banks and other financial service providers with regulatory, enforcement, transactional and litigation matters.

Christie M. Walker was elected as a shareholder with Fowler White and Burnett Miami, FL office in the maritime practice group. Walker focuses her practice on all aspects of admiralty law.

2013
Andrew V. Cobbe has joined The Soto Law Group in Fort Lauderdale as an associate focusing on business and construction law.

2016
Carlos H. Arce , was named partner with Lubel Rosen in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Arce focuses his practice on health law, HIPAA compliance, privacy and data breach, personal injury protection and medical malpractice defense.

Vijay Choksi , published the chapter Legal Aspects of Cannabis in CANNABIS: a Clinician’s Guide (2018), edited by Betty Wedman-St. Louis.

2017
Kristine DeSoiza has joined the Fort Lauderdale office of Fowler White Burnett a s an associate in the insurance practice group. DeSoiza focuses her practice on insurance coverage disputes, construction defect claims, professional liability claims, commercial general liability, and commercial litigation.

Dwight Brock (JD 1982), Collier County Clerk of the Circuit Court passed away on June 12, 2018. He served as an attorney and certified public accountant and was elected clerk of Collier County from 1993 – 2018. | Obituary
Students News
On Campus Interview (OCI) Fall 2018

NSU Law students are invited to participate in our Fall 2018 On-Campus Interview Program (OCI), held from August 27 – November 9, 2018. OCI allows students to apply to government, public interest and law firm employers for summer associate, law clerk and permanent employment. Employers may also choose to participate in our Resume Collection Program. This program allows employers to receive resumes and application materials from students. The employers then have the opportunity to contact interested students directly to schedule interviews.
 
Bidding for the program begins in Symplicity on July 12. To prepare, students should review the employer list and schedule an appointment with a career advisor to have their resume reviewed and to discuss their bid list.  
Robert Orseck Memorial Moot Court Competition

Veronika Balbuzanova and Daniella Brooks advanced to the quarter finals at the 2018 Robert Orseck Memorial Moot Court Competition held during The Florida Bar convention in Orlando, Florida in June 2018. Thanks to coaches Professor Robert Beharriell & Michelle Murray and alumnus Kara Stachel.

NSU Law students participate in Anti-Defamation League research program

Jonathan Daily and Isai Bonilla are participating in and writing for the Anti-Defamation League Summer Associate Research Program. Summer associates, with ADL staff attorneys, research actual incidents brought to the attention of ADL. Their work product is a critical resource for ADL’s advocacy year-round.
