Leo Goodwin Sr Building Rededication 
NSU and the Leo Goodwin Foundation celebrated the rededication of the Leo Goodwin Sr Building on May 23, 2018, joined by over 100 members of the law school alumni community and friends of the Foundation.  Jihad Sheikha (rising 2L) and Ariel Deray (JD 2015), both Goodwin scholars, spoke at the event along with President George Hanbury, Dean Garon and Leo Goodwin Foundation Trustees Elliot Borkson and Alan Goldberg. Both Goodwin scholars thanked the Goodwin Foundation for their gifts and the positive influence the Foundation has had on the South Florida community.
NSU Law Launches LL.M.
NSU Law announces its eagerly awaited Master of Laws (LL.M.) program designed for attorneys to enhance the knowledge and skills needed in today’s climate of fast-paced technological and economic growth.

The program, beginning Fall 2018, is designed to be highly flexible, so lawyers can participate online or on campus at convenient times to build the scope of their legal practice and enhance their success without putting their careers on hold.

NSU Law Congratulates Five Tenured Professors
Following the recommendation of the Shepard Broad College of Law, Nova Southeastern University has granted tenure to five members of the NSU Law faculty. The recipients of tenure are Professors Olympia Duhart , Kenneth L. Lewis, Jr. , Michele Struffolino, Kate Webber Nuñez , and Marilyn Uzdavines . The tenure committee sincerely appreciates the time and sincerity of NSU Law alumni that participated in the comment portion of the review. In addition to tenure, Professor Lewis and Professor Uzdavines were promoted to Professor of Law; Professors Duhart, Struffolino, and Nuñez had previously been promoted to full professor. The grant of tenure is an institutional recognition of each faculty member’s exceptional scholarship, teaching and service.

"Make an Impact with the Law Day"
NSU Law Dean Marty-Nelson and Dean Duhart and the Law School Admission Council collaborated to bring students from three South Florida underrepresented high schools to "Make an Impact with the Law Day" under the LSAC Diversity Matters Grant and additional support by Society of American Law Teachers.

The program included sessions taught by NSU Law administrators, professors, staff, and alumni on topics such as negotiations, trial preparation, tax, constitutional, and criminal law. Students participated in mock negotiations and a mock criminal law school class.

Entrepreneurial Boot Camp

NSU Shepard Broad College of Law
In Collaboration with the Shepard Broad College of Law, H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, and the College of Engineering and Computing, the Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic will offer the first annual Entrepreneurial Boot Camp.

The program is designed to immerse entrepreneurs in the skills and disciplines needed to successfully launch a start-up business, with particular focus on those companies built on research, design, or innovation.

New Director of Alumni Relations
Karen Rose  began her role as Director of Alumni Relations at NSU Law in late March, 2018. As director, she is responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive alumni relations program which includes guidance to the Alumni Chapters; management of student/alumni mentoring programs, and Continuing Legal Education programs. In addition, she oversees student/alumni reunions and events while maintaining consistent outreach to alumni. Karen has been with NSU law for almost 10 years. Prior to accepting this latest position, Karen worked as an Administrator in the NSU Law Faculty Support Department, as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the NSU Law Library, and also as the Serials and Bindery Manager in NSU’s Law Library. Karen is an alumna of NSU and brings with her a positive outlook, innovative ideas, and a determined team spirit. Welcome, Karen!
Professor Michael Flynn
Was quoted in the May 3, 2018 issue of the Florida Bulldog regarding a Miami, Florida judge sealing a case in which the State dropped a child sex abuse charge. Flynn responded to a reporter’s inquiry concerning the unauthorized identification and publication of information identifying the victim or alleged victim of sexual abuse. the U.S. State Department Office of Children’s Legal Issues.
Professor Richard Grosso
Was quoted in the May 15, 2018 issue of the Sun Sentinel. Professor Grosso is involved in the preservation of the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, protecting the area from development.
Provided a guest op/ed published in the May 30, 2018 issues of the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel titled "RisingSe Demands That South Florida do More to Address the Threat."
Professor Robert M. Jarvis
Was quoted in the May 17, 2018 issue of the Virginia Pilot concerning Nikolas Cruz the alleged gunman charged with the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
Was interviewed by both the Sun Sentinel and WIOD to discuss The Supreme Court striking down the federal ban on sports betting, including next steps and the future of sports betting in Florida.
Professor Donna Litman
Spoke at the May 3, 2018 NSU Alvin Sherman Library’s financial literacy program, Thinking Money . Her presentation was titled Making Sense of the New Tax Law . The NSU Library was one of 50 libraries in the country to receive a programming grant and exhibit from the American Library Association and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc. 
Professor of Practice Elena Minicucci
Was appointed to serve a 3-year term as a member of the Board of Directors for Florida Lawyers Assistance, Inc., commencing July 1, 2018.  Florida Lawyers Assistance, Inc ., is a non-profit corporation. Formed in 1986 when the Florida Supreme Court mandated the creation of a program to assist lawyers who suffer from substance abuse, mental health or other disorders that negatively affect their lives and careers, FLA also assists judges and law students who face similar challenges. Professor Minicucci teaches 1L students in the Academic Success and Professionalism Program and also teaches other upper level courses at NSU Law. She formerly served as Director of Alumni Relations for NSU Law from 2011-2016 and practiced law in South Florida since 1996.
Professor Emeritus Marc Rohr
Was awarded the 2018 Profile in Courage from the Broward Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, in recognition of his outstanding protection of the First Amendment.

Maria C. Gonzalez , has been appointed by the Florida Bar to a three-year term on the board of The 
Florida Bar Foundation, a statewide charitable organization whose mission is to provide greater access to justice. Her term begins July 1, 2018. Gonzalez is a board-certified marital and family lawyer with Young, Berman, Karpf & Gonzalez, P.A., and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) Florida Chapter.

Rachel Davant , is opening a new Fort Lauderdale-based firm, Davant Law, P.A. Davant has been recognized by her peers as a "Rising Star" in Florida Super Lawyers. She not only maintains an active legal practice, but has also taught as an Adjunct Professor at NSU College of Law. Courses she has taught are Legal Research and Reasoning, Civil Pretrial Procedure, Law of Risk Management, Advanced Topics in FDA Law, The Law of Accreditation and Licensing, and Law of Medicare and Medicaid.

Dean Olympia Duhart , granted tenure at the NSU Shepard Broad College of Law.

Professor Kenneth Lewis, Jr. , granted tenure at the NSU Shepard Broad College of Law.

2005
Charles Davant , is opening a new Fort Lauderdale-based firm, Davant Law, P.A. Davant is an experienced litigation and trial attorney. His practice involves a wide variety of marine-related cases as well as the defense of product liability cases on behalf of manufacturers in both the marine and non-marine arenas. He has specifically assisted clients in resolving matters involving the Limitation of Liability Act, maritime personal injury, property damage, marine salvage and marine insurance coverage issues. He has also been successful at the appellate level with decisions involving admiralty matters in the Eleventh Circuit. 

Jason Daniel Joffe , is a partner in the full-service global law firm of Squire Patton Boggs. His practice serves a wide variety of clients, including international financial institutions, healthcare clients, private equity groups, and closely held corporations. Joffe has tried various commercial disputes in both state and federal court and has argued before several of Florida’s district courts of appeal and federal circuit courts of appeal. Joffe was featured in On The Rise on May 7, 2018 in the Daily Business Review online.

Robert D. Sparks , partner in the Tampa-based firm of Givens Givens Sparks, was awarded a 30 million jury verdict in a pedestrian injury case. This was the highest value verdict awarded in the state of Florida for a brain injury in 2017 and was the fourth highest verdict for personal injury cases overall in the state. Additionally, the case award was the 62nd highest verdict awarded in the country in 2017 across all legal categories. Sparks is the lead trial attorney for the personal injury division, which has recovered millions of dollars on behalf of its clients in both state and federal courts.

Lauren S. Fallick , has been promoted to partner with Haber Slade, P.A. in Miami, FL. Fallick’s practice areas include complex business and commercial litigation, insurance coverage litigation, insurance agent liability, real estate disputes, corporate, limited liability, and partnership disputes, construction litigation, and general civil litigation. Fallick frequently takes part in various panel discussions in the areas of insurance coverage and insurance agent liability

Melissa McDavitt , is a partner in the West Palm Beach office of the firm of Conroy Simberg. Her practice is in personal injury protection (PIP), no-fault and special investigations unit (SIU) claims and has handled and tried numerous cases, including those involving PIP fraud, improper billing, and coverage. McDavitt was featured in On The Rise on May 7, 2018 in the Daily Business Review online.

Justin Parafinczuk , has been appointed to a leadership position on the Plaintiff’s Steering Committing for Essure. Parafinczuk is a Board Certified Civil Trial Attorney whose practice focuses on litigation including complex commercial litigation, class actions, products liability, employment litigation and appellate litigation. His trial practice includes wrongful death, professional liability, products liability, shareholder disputes and commercial general liability. He is a partner in the Fort Lauderdale-based firm of Koch Parafinczuk Wolf Susen.  

2009
Marcus Susen , has been appointed to a leadership position on the Plaintiff’s Steering Committing for Essure. Susen focuses his practice on all facets of litigation. He has tried cases in both state and federal courts involving an array of claims including products liability, premises liability, auto accidents, and breach of contract. He is a partner in the Fort Lauderdale-based firm of Koch Parafinczuk Wolf Susen.  

Jeffrey Wank , is a partner in the Fort Lauderdale office of Kelley Kronenberg. Wank was featured in On The Rise on May 7, 2018 in the Daily Business Review online.

Jamie B. Wasserman , is a partner in the Fort Lauderdale office of Shutts & Bowen. Wasserman specializes in business litigation across many different specialties, including but not limited to medical, real estate, ad valorem tax challenges, drafting employment agreements, including noncompetition and non-solicitation agreements. Wasserman was featured in On The Rise on May 7, 2018 in the dbr Daily Business Review online .

The Honorable Christine DiRaimondo , has been appointed to Miami-Dade County Court in February after serving as a felony division chief in the Miami-Dade state attorney’s office. 

Fausto Sanchez , is a partner in the Miami office of the firm of Diaz, Reus & Targ. His practice is focused on complex commercial litigation and white collar criminal defense, on both the trial and appellate level. He holds Board Certification in the area of Criminal Trial Law from the Florida Bar and is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist. Sanchez was featured in On The Rise on May 7, 2018 in the dbr Daily Business Review online.

2013
Casey B. Mullin , has been promoted to partner in the West Palm Beach office of the firm Kelley Kronenberg. Mullin focuses his practice on General Liability, First Party Property Insurance Defense, Commercial Litigation and Criminal Defense.

Alberto Polimeni , has been promoted to partner in the Miami office of the firm Kelley Kronenberg. Polimeni is a member of the firm’s Immigration and Nationality Practice Group and serves as the Director of the firm’s Italian Practice, assists foreign entities and individuals in successfully establishing business in the U.S., as well as domestic clients in the area of corporate, business, and employment law. He is experienced in advising businesses regarding corporate, taxation, transactional, litigation and immigration matters, both nationally and internationally.

2014
Reinaldo Diaz , started Lake Worth Waterkeeper, a 501c3 that is a member of Waterkeeper Alliance. It advocates for the Lake Worth Lagoon (Intracoastal Waterway) and its watershed. It has developed into one of Florida’s most important watersheds, home to a massive marine industry of boaters, divers, fishermen, and beach bums that serves as a base of Florida’s tourism industry. Lake Worth Waterkeeper seeks to protect these industries and this lifestyle by protecting the watershed and environment that these industries depend on.

Lydia Harley , has been promoted to partner in the Fort Lauderdale office of the firm Kelley Kronenberg. Harley manages the firm’s Multinational Client Practice Group and is the Director of the firm’s German Practice. She focuses her practice on the defense of General Liability, Immigration, and the prosecution and defense of declaratory judgement actions involving insurance coverage disputes and extra-contractual claims.

Maria Santi , generously mentored and spoke with the students in Professor Kathy Cerminara’s Health Policy, Bioethics & Quality class.

2018
Jordan Snyder , published an article entitled Snapping Happy , in Diver Magazine, “North America’s longest established dive magazine.” The article is about the first and only legal dive in the United States where people can dive with alligators. He also took all the pictures.   Snapping Happy , DIVER MAGAZINE 44 (2018).

Students News
On Campus Interview (OCI) Fall 2018

NSU Law students are invited to participate in our Fall 2018 On-Campus Interview Program (OCI), held from August 27 – November 9, 2018. OCI allows students to apply to government, public interest and law firm employers for summer associate, law clerk and permanent employment. Employers may also choose to participate in our Resume Collection Program. This program allows employers to receive resumes and application materials from students. The employers then have the opportunity to contact interested students directly to schedule interviews.
 
Bidding for the program begins in Symplicity on July 12. To prepare, students should review the employer list and schedule an appointment with a career advisor to have their resume reviewed and to discuss their bid list.
