Cincinnati Country Day School
October 2022 Alumni Journal
| |
Match Day, our most significant day of fundraising for the Country Day Fund, is coming up on Thursday, November 3rd. All funds raised on Match Day support the student experience throughout the year, and it's your chance to make a difference. We ask that all our alumni consider a gift in support of our students and school.
Your gifts provide innovative experiences and opportunities, help children discover their passions, teach them to collaborate, build on their strengths, and work in service to others. Your gifts shape the individuals who will go on to shape the world. With you, The Future is Bright!
On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, thank you for your support!

Join in on the Match Day Fun With the Alumni Photo Contest!
Match Day is only a few weeks away, and we will be looking towards the future and all the opportunities your gifts will provide for our students, faculty, and school. But before we look ahead on November 3rd, we want to look back on Country Day memories and all that has been made possible by generous donors of the past. For the next 2 weeks, we invite all our alumni to send in their favorite photos and memories from their time at CCDS. The best photo will win a prize!
We will be posting the photos on the CCDS Alumni Instagram page in the week leading up to Match Day, so be sure to follow us at @countrydayalumni!
To submit your photos, direct message us on the alumni instagram page or email Casey Santi, associate director of annual giving and alumni engagement, at santic@countryday.net.

Three Alumni Recognized for Their Incredible Accomplishments and Contributions
Over homecoming weekend, the Cincinnati Country Day School community celebrated three alumni for their dedication to the greater community at the Alumni Breakfast. Dr. Peter J. Stern '62 and Matthew A. Rosen ’72 were selected as this year's Virtue in Action Award recipients. Dr. Hema Magge ’97 was selected as the 2022 Distinguished Alumna.
“During her tenure at Country Day, Hema was a powerhouse, a shining star, a force of nature; she was one of a kind,” said Rob Zimmerman ’98, head of school. “Country Day’s mission compels us to create leaders who kindle the potential in others and better a dynamic world, and Hema’s leadership and commitment to global health is an inspiring example of this mission in action.”
Hema is a senior program officer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and focuses on global newborn health. She spent the last 10 years learning and immersing in global health and equity working with NGOs in Africa – five years in Rwanda with Partners in Heath, and then four years in Ethiopia before returning to the United States to work for the Gates Foundation.

Dr. Peter J. Stern dedicated his distinguished career as an orthopedic surgeon and professor at UC Health/UC College of Medicine to the progression of education in orthopedic and hand surgery.
“Peter’s commitment to the community has shined beyond his profession,” said Zimmerman. “We are grateful for his tremendous example of service and his commitment to Country Day. And while Dr. Stern has received more awards than he can probably keep track of, I’d like to think that there is no higher honor for a Country Day alumnus than to be recognized as an exemplar of the school’s motto, Virtue in Action.”

As one of this year’s Virtue in Action award recipients, Matthew Rosen believes in the importance of working for something bigger than yourself. This tradition of service, something he feels was instilled in him during his time at Country Day, is what led him to his career in the non-profit space.
“Country Day is a family school. When Rob [Zimmerman] informed me that I got this award, I thought about Mr. [Chuck] Yeiser [former headmaster]. First, what a great friend he had been to me since graduation. He was Virtue in Action – someone who does the right thing for the right reasons. I want to dedicate this award to Mr. Yeiser, class of 1939,” said Rosen. “I also want to thank my parents for having the insight to send me to a place as awesome as Country Day where I could learn to be something bigger than myself and to be a part of something bigger than myself.”

Class of 2035 Plants Lifer Tree
On Thursday, October 6, the kindergarten class – the Class of 2035 – planted their "lifer" tree. A tradition going back seven years starting with the Class of 2028, the lifer tree symbolizes the start of a Country Day student's journey throughout the school. Each year, the kindergarten class plants a tree on the campus in the Lifer Tree Grove.
This year, kindergarten teacher Lee Ann Bertsch read the book "We Planted a Tree" by Diane Muldrow to 41 kindergarteners prior to the planting ceremony. Before the planting, Head of School Rob Zimmerman '98 shared some words with the young students.
"We plant this tree because this world is ours to take care of and to celebrate the beginning of your journey as a student at Country Day," said Zimmerman.
As one student commented, “We plant this now for the tree to grow while we are growing.”
Next time you’re on campus, walk through the Lifer Tree Grove and see all the trees we’ve planted since 2015.
