Vote for STM In Semi-Finals of "Aviva Community Fund" Competition for $150K! Please register NOW and vote online EVERY DAY Dec 3rd-12th to help STMC win up to $150,000 for sports equipment!
Thanks to many of you who voted, STM is one of 38 organizations - out of 780+ competitors across Canada - that made the Semi-Finals of the Aviva Community Fund competition in the 1st Qualification Round! We're in the running for a grant of up to $150K for basketball hoops & backboards, volleyball stanchions, weight room equipment & wrestling mats for the new athletic centre!
Next STM, will compete with 90 organizations in the Semi-Finals Dec 3rd-12th. To be one of 30 Finalists, STM has to get enough votes to keep us among the top 10 vying for large grants. Then a panel of judges will decide how to divvy up $1 million among the 30 Finalists. Every Finalist is guaranteed to get at least $5,000. The more votes we get, the better our chances for big money. STM can win this, but we need ALL KNIGHTS voting EVERY DAY! Will you take a minute to help? PLEASE REGISTER NOW and VOTE HERE DEC 3rd-12th:

Telus Employees & Retirees Can Have A Huge Impact Through Matching Gifts Sign Up for Telus Employee Giving Nov 5th-16th and Telus Will Match Your Donation!
If you know any TELUS employees or retirees, please pass this on: TELUS has announced that it will once again match all donations made by TELUS employees & retirees to eligible Canadian charities - up to $10,000 per year per individual! From Nov 5th-16th, you can sign up to have a donation automatically deducted from your Telus paycheque, and Telus will send your donation to your chosen charity with a matching gift for the total. (Of course, we hope STM will be your chosen charity!)
Matching gifts have a huge impact at STM: A modest donation of $40 from a bi-monthly paycheque contributes over $2,000 to support STM's programs and new facilities. Last year, STM received a $5,000 donation from a TELUS employee, with a matching $5,000 donation.
When you sign up, you can find us under "ST. THOMAS MORE". Let us know if you sign up too, so we can be on the lookout for your donation.
TELUS also rewards volunteer work by Telus team members and retirees through the "Dollars for Doers" program. Once an individual has recorded a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service in a year they are able to direct a $200 grant to the registered Canadian charity or non-profit sports organization of their choice.

A Homecoming Away From Home!
October 12th, 2012
Not even a 5:00pm Friday Kick Off and torrential cold rain could dampen (pun intended) the legendary Knights' spirit. The pep band played, the fans cheered, the Knights beat Fox 36-6 as the principal looked on. The community celebrated the victory at a post-game reception held at the 8 Rinks. A good time was had by all!
CHECK OUT THE LIST OF PAST GRID IRON KNIGHTS THAT IS NOW POSTED ON OUR WEBSITE. IT IS A WORK IN PROGRESS AND WE NEED YOUR HELP TO ENDURE ITS ACCURACY. FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME TO CONTACT ME IF THERE ARE INACCURACIES! CLICK "HERE" TO GET TO THE LIST.

Construction Moving Well
We need another stretch of good weather!

Gym Walls Going Up
|
| A View from Inside |
Our extended summer appears to have come and gone; however, during those days of endless sunshine the CAPO construction crew made great strides in the construction of our gym. The roof trusses are now being installed and if we can squeeze out a couple of fairly dry weeks in November, there is a chance that we can install the "torch-on" roof. If we get that done then, CAPO can focus on the inside work and our dream of a late spring opening will become a reality. If any Knight of Old has a direct prayer line to God, the ultimate weather man, please feel free to contact us. (Jordan Witzel ('00) is the Calgary GLOBAL TV weather man. Apparently he can only forecast the weather.)
THE 2013 BOYS CHANCELLOR HAS BEEN CANCELLED; HOWEVER, THE ALUMNI BBALL TOURNEY HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED FOR MAY WHERE IT WILL HOPEFULLY BE THE FIRST ATHLETIC EVENT TO TAKE PLACE IN OUR BRAND NEW ALUMNI GYM. THE PLAN IS FOR THE MOTHERS' DAY MASS TO BE THE FIRST COMMUNITY EVENT TO BE HELD IN OUR NEW FACILITY.
If you have any questions regarding the construction plans for the gym, field or the campaign itself, please feel free to contact

Remembrance Day Mass and Reception Mass at Our Lady of Mercy on Nov 8th at 11pm!
On November 8th, our school community will be gathering for our annual Remembrance Day mass, which in the absence of a gym, will take place at the Our Lady of Mercy Church. Any alumni who wish to attend are encouraged to attend the mass at 11:00am. A reception will take place immediately following the mass in the STMC cafeteria for all our guests.
We ask that you pray for all the members of STMC's extended family who have lost loved ones recently, especially for the Manrique family. Jomar Manrique, grad of 2004, passed away in September in a tragic automobile accident. Jomar leaves behind his parents Joselito and Emmeline , a brother Juan Emil ('06) and a sister Jasmin ('13). |

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party
Get in the Christmas Spirit and Support STMC at the same time on Dec. 21st!
Now in its 11th year, the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party has established itself as a hugely popular Christmas tradition in Vancouver. The event, which has raised funds for numerous Vancouver charities over the years, is the brainchild of Chris Boyd and Jordan Birch, both from the grad class of 2000. These Knights of Old have identified the More Spirit Campaign as one of the recipients of the funds generated by the event this year. You can support STMC and help yourself get into the Christmas Spirit by attending this event which takes place on December 21st at the Commodore Ballroom. Check out the Facebook site for information and ticket availability.

If you want an announcement made in the bulletin, contact Hank Bouwman
| Dino and Xavier Cabalfin |
Xavier Leonardo Cabalfin was born on January 9, 2012 in Kelowna. He is the first son for Dino ('92) & Aurea Cabalfin. He is also the first grandson Noel and Myra (Dino's parents) and first nephew for Nathan ('96) and Angelo ('00). Dino, who is the Campus Director at the Vancouver Career College, was also recently named to the Board of Directors of Crime Stoppers BC. Editor's Note: This birth of announcement was left out of the Summer Edition. Sorry Dino
Danielle Lowe ('03), sister of Chris ('01) and Mike ('07) recently earned her Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology. Her primary area of interest and research was in the area of eating disorders. She is currently working out of the Vancouver and Metrotown offices of Jericho Counselling Service. Congratulations to Danielle and the Lowe family.
Brian Nip ('90) and his wife Jovy are pleased to announce the birth of their son Ryan Alexander (6lbs 14 oz). He was born on the same day as his older sister Stephanie (October 23rd). Congratulations to the Nip family!
Stephen Scaccia ('10) has been living he dream the last few weeks. Stephen is a singer who has created quite a following in the area. About 3 weeks ago, when appearing at an event, Michael Bubl, his idol, came up on stage and sang with Stephen. Recently Stephen sang the anthem and at half time of a BC Lions game. In the tunnel after that he met Michael Bubl and that is where this photo to the left was taken. Bubl has asked Stephen to sing at an upcoming Vancouver Giants game. Pretty cool!
Bill Lynam ('68), who currently lives in Quebec, came to town for a visit. He changed his travel plans so that he could visit some of his 1968 classmates and attend the Varsity football game against VC. He managed an impromptu reunion with a few of the boys: Brian Higgins, Jack Steele, John Maddalozzo, Brian Johnston and Rick King. Bill shared some remarkable memories with us that only the oldest of the Knights of Old would recall: like the Ho Ho's restaurant which was a nearby meeting place for seniors, the rock and glass filled field and the scary field house which was located at the south end of the property. He also recalled this iconic photo found below that was in the 1968 yearbook and on the sports page of the 1968 Columbian newspaper ( a forerunner to today's Burnaby Now). The photo was taken at Queen's Park Stadium. It shows the Knights bench reflected in a puddle giving the impression of more depth. In truth the Knights' squad only had 18 players but they successfully defeated the much larger and more established Centennial Centaurs by a score of 7-0. Oh the memories!

More Knight Life
A Report on Knights and Sports
We often report on the exploits of Kyle Turris ('07), Calvin McCarty ('03) and Jon Cornish ('02) and rightly so. They are performing at the highest level of their respective sports. In fact, Jon has a chance to be the TOP Canadian in the CFL this year, not to mention he is being considered as a legitimate candidate for the MVP award. Amazing. However, there appea rs to be a record number of alumni playing sports at the post-secondary level. Here is a list. Apologies to anyone that has been missed.
One Knight who deserves special recognition is Kimberly Newell ('12). Kimberly has had an awesome start to her NCAA Division 1 hockey career. In her first start as an underage freshman goalie for the Ivy League Princeton Tigers, she emerged as the first star in a 2-1 victory over the RIT Tigers. The next night Kimberly backstopped Princeton to a 6-3 victory over the Colonials of Robert Morris. This is truly amazing considering that Kimberly graduated from STMC at an accelerated pace and just turned 17. We wish Kimberly all the best.
For a more detailed listing of the accomplishments click on this link on the STMC website.
